Cincinnati travels to Reliant Stadium on Sunday, September 20, for a 1:00 PM ET kickoff against Houston. The Bengals enter at 1-0 after a 33-27 win over Tampa Bay, while the Texans are 0-1 after a 36-31 home loss to Buffalo. The records point in opposite directions, but the opening performances from both teams were encouraging. Cincinnati scored 24 points off four Tampa Bay turnovers, while Houston produced 381 yards, held the ball for 36:17, and had a chance to win in the final minute before C.J. Stroud lost a fumble.
Why Our Model Sees Value:
“Houston’s 0-1 record hides a productive offensive opener, while Cincinnati’s 33 points were boosted by 24 points off turnovers that are difficult to repeat.”
Houston Favored Despite 0-1 Start
Polymarket currently prices Houston at 59¢ to win and Cincinnati at 42¢, giving the Texans a 59% implied probability. The market has attracted about $25,500 in volume across its available game markets. At 59¢, Houston is favored but hardly treated as a dominant home side, but they are expected to get the win.
Our Projections Favor Houston
My win probability for Houston is slightly higher at 61.8%. The main reason is that Cincinnati’s Week 1 scoring looks difficult to reproduce. The Bengals gained 351 yards and 5.6 yards per play against Tampa Bay, but four takeaways created short fields and direct scoring opportunities. Houston lost despite running 73 plays, gaining 381 yards and getting 274 passing yards with two touchdowns from Stroud. The Texans also have home-field advantage and enough pass-rush talent to make Burrow work throughout the game. Houston is playable up to 60¢, but the value shrinks quickly above that point.

Cincinnati is tied at 1-0 with Baltimore and Pittsburgh at the top of the AFC North, so another win would keep the Bengals level with the early division leaders before a Week 3 road game in Pittsburgh. Houston has a different sense of urgency. An 0-2 start with both losses at home would put immediate pressure on a team expected to be in the AFC playoff race this season. The Texans also visit Indianapolis in Week 3, making Sunday an important chance to avoid chasing teams in the standings before division play begins for them.
Burrow completed 25 of 35 passes for 254 yards with one touchdown and one interception against Tampa Bay. Cincinnati moved the ball well after its opening three-and-out, but the offense did not have to carry the full scoring load because the defense repeatedly handed it favorable field position. Keeping that in mind will be important when making NFL predictions surrounding this game on Sunday.
Houston is a different test than the Bucs. Buffalo averaged 7.9 yards per play and Josh Allen threw for 334 yards in Week 1, including major gains to Dalton Kincaid and DJ Moore. That is the area Cincinnati can attack with Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins and Mike Gesicki. Gesicki led the Bengals with 78 receiving yards in the opener, while Higgins added 59. If Burrow gets time, Cincinnati has enough receiving depth to create the same stress Buffalo did.
Stroud looked sharper than Houston’s 0-1 record suggests, completing 26 of 38 passes for 274 yards and two touchdowns. The late strip-sack was costly, but Houston consistently sustained offense against Buffalo. David Montgomery also scored three touchdowns in his Texans debut, giving the offense a stronger short-yardage and red-zone option.
Cincinnati’s defense was the story of Week 1. The Bengals forced four fumbles and recorded four sacks, with Boye Mafe and Bryan Cook making immediate impacts. The question is whether that pressure can remain effective without another wave of turnovers. Stroud protecting the football is the clearest path to Houston controlling this game.
Cincinnati came out of Week 1 in good shape. Demetrius Knight Jr. left late because of cramping, while Shemar Stewart was the main injury-related inactive entering the opener. Houston has a more notable concern at linebacker, with Henry To’oTo’o expected to miss time because of a shoulder injury. Jake Hummel also left the Buffalo game with an abdominal issue.
That could give Cincinnati opportunities with Chase Brown, Samaje Perine and short throws over the middle. Still, Houston’s home setting, Stroud’s Week 1 form, and Cincinnati’s reliance on turnover-created scoring push my projection slightly above the market. My forecast is Houston 27, Cincinnati 24, with the Texans surviving a close fourth quarter.
