Bills vs Texans Prediction & Preview: Playoff Hopefuls Meet In Week 1

Buffalo and Houston begin the 2026 regular season with an AFC measuring stick game on Sunday at Reliant Stadium. Both clubs finished 12-5 last season, and both enter Week 1 with realistic conference-title expectations. Houston has become a particularly difficult opponent for Josh Allen, winning the past two meetings in Houston. Buffalo enters with a new head coach in Joe Brady and a major addition at receiver in DJ Moore, giving Allen another proven option against a Houston defense that caused serious problems for the Bills last November.
Why Our Model Sees Value:
“Houston’s recent success against Buffalo appears to be carrying considerable weight in the price. Buffalo enters this meeting better equipped to attack Houston’s pass rush through its running game, quicker throws, and the addition of DJ Moore. The Bills have enough offensive advantages to make a 51¢ price on -1.5 slightly too low.”
Bills' Offense More Dangerous
Polymarket currently has Buffalo -1.5 priced around 51¢, while Houston +1.5 sits near 50¢. The Bills are also roughly 52¢ to win outright, so traders are treating this game as close to even despite Buffalo finishing last season with 6,397 total offensive yards compared with Houston’s 5,559. That difference does not guarantee Buffalo an advantage Sunday, especially on the road, but it illustrates the higher offensive ceiling the Bills carried into the offseason.
Pass Protection the Key
The key is whether Buffalo can prevent Houston’s defensive front from dictating the game again. Houston pressured Allen repeatedly during its 23-19 victory last season and finished with 8 sacks. My 55% probability for Buffalo covering -1.5 gives the Bills a 4% edge over the current 51% implied probability. At that price, the prediction offers enough separation to support Buffalo without assuming the matchup is significantly more one-sided than the market indicates.

Buffalo produced 6,397 offensive yards last season and averaged 5.8 yards per play. The running game was especially productive, generating 2,714 yards at 5 yards per carry. James Cook accounted for 1,621 rushing yards, averaged 5.2 per attempt, and scored 12 rushing touchdowns.
That ground attack could be critical for the outcome of our Bills vs Texans prediction. The Texans generated pressure without regularly sending extra rushers last season, allowing them to keep more defenders in coverage. Buffalo cannot allow Allen to spend the afternoon waiting for long routes to develop. Cook should receive a meaningful early workload, with quick throws to Khalil Shakir, Dalton Kincaid, and DJ Moore used to keep the pass rush from controlling obvious passing situations.
Allen completed 69.4% of his passes for 3,668 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions during the 2025 regular season. He also added 579 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns. Few quarterbacks provide a larger individual impact.
Houston remains a poor stylistic matchup for him. Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter combined for 27 sacks last season, while Houston’s defense recorded 47 sacks overall. Allen was sacked 8 times in the previous meeting, and Houston generated much of that pressure without heavy blitz usage.
Buffalo’s answer has to be quicker throws. If Allen consistently takes the underneath completion instead of extending plays in search of something larger, Houston’s front should have fewer opportunities to create drive-killing losses.
C.J. Stroud enters the season after throwing for 3,041 yards with 19 touchdowns and 8 interceptions in 2025. Nico Collins remained his top target with 1,117 receiving yards, while Dalton Schultz added 777.
Houston has attempted to improve the offense around Stroud by adding David Montgomery and making changes along the offensive line. The Texans ran for only 1,852 yards last season and averaged 3.9 yards per carry, well below Buffalo’s production.
Establishing Montgomery would help Houston control possession and reduce the number of opportunities Allen receives. If Houston becomes dependent on Stroud converting long passing downs, Buffalo’s chances increase.
Buffalo’s Thursday injury report listed cornerback Jordan Hancock and running back Ty Johnson as nonparticipants, with defensive lineman T.J. Sanders limited. Houston had a relatively clean report, although defensive tackle Kayden McDonald was limited with an ankle issue. Trent Brown and Wade Woodaz were full participants.
Houston deserves respect because its defense has repeatedly bothered Allen, and home-field advantage for Houston makes a tight spread reasonable. Still, Buffalo has several ways to respond that were less established during last season’s meeting. Cook can force Houston to defend the run, Moore gives Allen another experienced receiving option, and Brady has had an entire offseason to build an approach specifically suited to protecting his quarterback from elite four-man pressure.
This projects as another close game, but Buffalo has the stronger overall offense in key moments and enough answers to make Bills -1.5 attractive at 51¢.
