The Detroit Pistons will host the Orlando Magic in the opening game of their first-round Eastern Conference playoff series on Sunday. The Magic went 1-1 in the play-in tournament, but blew out the Charlotte Hornets to earn the eighth seed in the East on Friday. They face a much tougher task in the first round against the top-seeded Pistons. Here, I break this series opener down and make my Magic vs Pistons Game 1 prediction.
Magic vs Pistons Game 1 Pick
- Pick: Pistons -6.5
- Confidence: 4/5
Game Snapshot
- Matchup: Orlando Magic vs Detroit Pistons

Key Storylines
The Orlando Magic did not take the easy way into the postseason, needing both chances in the play-in tournament to reach the first round. But the Magic got the job done in convincing fashion at home against Charlotte. The question now is whether the offense of Orlando can generate enough perimeter scoring without being able to rely on scoring at the rim as often against Jalen Duren and the rest of the Detroit frontcourt.
Detroit had a phenomenal regular season, finishing with the best record in the Eastern Conference. Now they have to prove that the regular season was no fluke, as they start their postseason at home against Orlando. The Pistons have the superior roster here and have a significant rest advantage by virtue of not having to participate in the play-in tournament. But Detroit still has to prove itself on this stage as they look to set the tone here.
Key Players
Orlando Magic
- Desmond Bane: Bane was the lone offensive bright spot for the Magic against the Sixers to start the play-in tournament. He will need to be great in this series for Orlando to have a chance.
- Paolo Banchero: Banchero looked much better against Charlotte than he did against Philly this past week. Which Banchero shows up will be a key factor in this series opener.
Detroit Pistons
- Cade Cunningham: The Pistons’ MVP candidate came back in early April after missing some time due to a collapsed lung. He is on the floor and ready to lead the Pistons in their playoff opener.
- Jalen Duren: Protecting the paint and forcing the Magic to score from the perimeter will make Duren one of the most important players in this series on either side.
Head-to-Head and Betting Trends
- These teams went 2-2 against each other this season.
- Both teams won once at home and once on the road against each other.
- Orlando is 1-1 against the spread in the postseason after the play-in tournament.
Magic vs Pistons Game 1 Model Projection
- Score Projection: Magic 101 – Pistons 112
- Win Probability: Magic 21%, Pistons 79%
The Magic are simply not going to look the way they did against Charlotte on Friday night in this series opener. Detroit is too good at protecting the paint and Orlando is not good enough at shooting from the outside to overcome that. I’ll take the Pistons to win, cover the spread, and take a 1-0 series lead in a series that could be over pretty quickly as long as Cunningham is able to stay healthy throughout.
