The Eastern Conference leading Detroit Pistons bring a 34-11 record to Phoenix on Thursday night to face the 28-19 Suns in a late-January NBA matchup. Detroit defeated Phoenix 108-105 on January 15 in Michigan, a grind that featured a strong fourth-quarter performance by the Pistons’ defense. The Suns will try to return the favor in this game, but will need to do so without their top scorer. Here, I make my Pistons vs Suns prediction ahead of this interesting inter-conference matchup.
Our Pistons vs Suns Pick

Game Snapshot
- Matchup: Detroit Pistons @ Phoenix Suns

Key Storylines
- Health watch: Devin Booker has been listed out recently with an ankle injury, and Jalen Green is out with a hamstring issue. Their status materially shifts Phoenix’s late-game shot creation and assist rate.
- Detroit’s engine: Cade Cunningham enters at 25.3 PPG and 9.8 APG, operating as one of the league’s premier offensive initiators. Jalen Duren adds 10.6 RPG with elite efficiency at the rim.
- Wing shooting: Grayson Allen’s strong three-point shooting is essential for Phoenix spacing if Booker remains out. For Detroit, Duncan Robinson’s gravity widens driving lanes for Cunningham.
- Schedule and rest: Detroit is in the middle of a multi-game Western road trip and plays at Golden State the next night, so minutes management and foul avoidance for Cunningham and Duren matter here. This is the third straight home game for the Suns, who enter this matchup with a 15-6 record on their home floor.
- While Booker is out, this is a huge game for Phoenix. The Suns enter the night in seventh place in the Western Conference standings and they could inch closer to a top six spot with a win here. But they will have to overcome some major injury adversity if they are going to get that win.

Final Thoughts
With Booker out, I am going to lay the points with the Pistons in this matchup. The Suns are going to be without their top crunch-time scorer, which should cause them problems against a Pistons team that puts so much pressure on opponents on both ends of the floor. Expect Cunningham and Duren to make all of the plays that Detroit needs them to make late and for the Pistons to get yet another important win as they try to maintain space between themselves and the rest of the teams in the Eastern Conference.
