Audi enters Formula 1 as a full works constructor beginning in the 2026 season after acquiring and restructuring the former Sauber team. The German manufacturer brings significant engineering resources and a long history of success in international motorsport.
The team operates from Sauber’s established Formula 1 facility in Hinwil, Switzerland, while Audi’s power unit program is developed in Neuburg, Germany. The project represents one of the most ambitious new manufacturer entries in modern Formula 1.
Audi begins its first full Formula 1 season with a driver lineup that combines experience with emerging talent. Nico Hülkenberg brings extensive Formula 1 knowledge, while Gabriel Bortoleto arrives looking to build upon a promising first season in Formula 1.
As a new works constructor, Audi has focused on building a fully integrated car and power unit package under the 2026 regulations. The team’s development program emphasizes efficiency, reliability, and gradual performance improvement during the early seasons of the project.
Early development has centered on understanding the new hybrid power unit rules and optimizing energy deployment alongside aerodynamic performance.
Nico Hülkenberg provides valuable experience for a new manufacturer entry. His consistent race pace and technical feedback can help guide car development during the early stages of Audi’s Formula 1 program.
Gabriel Bortoleto enters the sport as a rookie with strong junior category credentials. His first full season will focus on gaining experience and adapting to the pace and strategy complexity of Formula 1.
Audi’s first Formula 1 season is expected to focus on building a competitive foundation rather than immediate championship results. The team’s long term investment suggests performance should improve steadily as engineers gain more experience with the new technical regulations.
Establishing reliability and consistent race finishes will likely be the primary objectives during the opening phase of Audi’s Formula 1 project. The early signs are mixed after Bortoleto collected the team's first World Championship points on the opening weekend in Melbourne, while Hulkenburg didn't even start due to technical issues.

Qualifying Performance | Lower midfield grid positions |
Race Pace | Developing as the team gathers data |
Power Unit Development | New works engine under 2026 rules |
Reliability | Key focus during debut season |
As a new works constructor, Audi will spend the early races collecting data and refining performance across both chassis and power unit systems.
Bortoleto over Hülkenberg H2H (season): This is interesting. Hülkenberg is the experienced hand but didn't even get to start Australia. Bortoleto looked composed and rapid. Backing the rookie to outscore the veteran across the season could be a genuine value play given that the market will default to pricing Hülkenberg higher based on experience alone.
