Waldo Cortes Acosta vs Curtis Blaydes Prediction & Preview - 9/12/2026

Updated September 11, 2026
Waldo Cortes Acosta and Curtis Blaydes meet in a major heavyweight matchup at Noche UFC on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona. Both men arrive after decision losses against ranked competition, but their paths to victory look very different here. Cortes Acosta wants a striking match where his activity, jab, combinations, and finishing ability can take over. Blaydes has spent much of his UFC career as one of the division's best wrestlers, and his clearest route remains putting Cortes Acosta on his back.
Why Our Model Sees Value:
“The 64¢ price appears to give too much weight to Blaydes' historical wrestling numbers and too little weight to the direction of his recent performances. Cortes Acosta's 74% takedown defense, superior current striking output, and ability to maintain pace across 3 rounds give him more ways to win minutes if Blaydes cannot consistently establish top control.”
We Make Cortes Acosta a Bigger Favorite
The 64¢ price is playable because it leaves a 4.5% gap between the market and my 68.5% projection. That gap is meaningful without requiring an extreme view of either fighter. Blaydes still deserves considerable respect because his wrestling presents the single biggest tactical threat Cortes Acosta faces. The concern for anyone backing Blaydes at 37¢ is that his historical takedown averages may overstate what he is likely to produce in this matchup.
The Matchup Favors Cortes Acosta
Cortes Acosta is my prediction because the fight appears increasingly favorable to him each minute it remains standing. Blaydes can absolutely win early rounds by forcing clinches, attacking the hips, and making Cortes Acosta carry his weight. My concern is whether he can repeat that process often enough across 15 minutes. Cortes Acosta has developed into a far more active heavyweight striker, lands at a higher rate, and has shown that he can punish opponents once their defensive movement slows.

Fighter | Age | Height | Reach | Stance | Record |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|

Curtis Blaydes | 35 | 6'4" | 80" | Orthodox | 19-6 |
Cortes Acosta enters at 17-3 after losing a unanimous decision to Alexander Volkov at UFC 328 on May 9. Volkov won by scores of 30-27, 29-28, and 29-28. Cortes Acosta landed 54 of 130 significant strikes compared with Volkov's 88 of 143, and the fight took place almost entirely at striking range. The result interrupted an impressive run during which Cortes Acosta stopped Derrick Lewis in the second round in January, knocked out Shamil Gaziev in the first round in November 2025, and stopped Ante Delija in the first round earlier that month. UFC lists him as having won 8 of his last 10 fights.
Blaydes is coming off a unanimous-decision defeat against Josh Hokit at UFC 327 on April 11, with all 3 judges scoring the fight 29-28. Before that, Blaydes earned a split-decision win over Rizvan Kuniev in June 2025. His previous appearance ended in a first-round stoppage loss to Tom Aspinall in their interim heavyweight title fight in July 2024. That gives Blaydes 2 losses in his last 3 appearances, a notable point for a fighter whose past success relied heavily on controlling where fights occurred.
Cortes Acosta has become one of the division's busier stand-up fighters. UFC currently credits him with 5.34 significant strikes landed per minute. About 86% of his recorded significant strikes have come from standing exchanges, which accurately describes his preferred approach. He generally works behind his jab, throws combinations, and has enough power to punish opponents who remain stationary in front of him.
The Lewis, Gaziev, and Delija finishes also showed a growing ability to convert pressure into stoppages. Cortes Acosta has 9 knockout victories in 17 professional wins, including 3 stoppage victories during his busy 2025-26 stretch. He does not need to hunt for a single knockout shot. His better performances come from producing enough volume that openings begin appearing naturally.
Volkov demonstrated that a disciplined striker can outwork him from range, particularly with varied attacks to the body and legs. Cortes Acosta landed just 54 significant strikes against Volkov while absorbing 88. Blaydes is not the same type of kickboxer as Volkov, however, which makes it difficult to transfer that game plan directly to this matchup.
Blaydes' wrestling is the primary reason this fight could be competitive. His career has featured 33 completed takedowns, and his current statistics put his average above 5 takedowns per 15 minutes. At his best, Blaydes can turn a heavyweight contest into repeated wrestling sequences, forcing opponents against the fence before changing levels and controlling them from top position.
That is the route he needs to take here. Trading combinations with Cortes Acosta for 15 minutes would allow the Dominican heavyweight to operate in his strongest phase. Blaydes instead needs to make Cortes Acosta defend clinches, hand fighting, level changes, and takedowns from the opening minutes.
The question is whether today's version of Blaydes can sustain that approach. He is now 35 and has had several demanding fights against elite heavyweights. The Hokit bout is particularly relevant because Blaydes was unable to dictate terms consistently enough to secure the judges' decision despite facing an opponent making only his third UFC appearance.
At 64¢ at Polymarket, Cortes Acosta is priced as the clear favorite without being treated as dominant. That looks reasonable, but my projection places his true chance slightly higher at 68.5%.
Everything comes back to Cortes Acosta's takedown defense against Blaydes' entries. UFC lists Cortes Acosta's takedown defense at 74%. He has also become more comfortable managing heavyweight exchanges without overcommitting, which can make it harder for opponents to attack his hips after missed punches.
If Blaydes secures early takedowns and establishes control, the entire prediction changes. Cortes Acosta could be forced to expend energy standing back up, reducing both his output and power later in the fight. Blaydes could then build rounds through control rather than needing to match him strike for strike.
Blaydes' wrestling will keep the matchup competitive, yet Cortes Acosta's 74% takedown defense, striking activity, and recent finishing give him the better overall path to victory across 3 rounds. My prediction is Waldo Cortes Acosta to win at 64¢, playable up to 66¢.
