This is a much closer fight than the moneyline suggests.
Jones has the more established professional résumé and has won 7 straight fights. His recent UFC form is particularly impressive, as he defeated Jeremy Stephens by unanimous decision in May 2025, stopped Bolaji Oki by strikes in September 2025, and then beat Axel Sola by unanimous decision in March 2026. That run shows a fighter who has become increasingly comfortable winning in multiple ways rather than relying on one route to victory.
His statistical background supports that assessment. Jones lands 5.98 significant strikes per minute while absorbing 4.45. He also averages 3.48 takedowns per 15 minutes and owns a 74% takedown defense. Those numbers explain why oddsmakers have made him a substantial favorite. Jones can fight at range, push opponents backward, change levels, and force them to defend multiple threats.
The problem for Jones is that Mederos is unusually accurate for a fighter receiving this kind of underdog price.
UFC's current statistics credit Mederos with 5.46 significant strikes landed per minute. Jones lands more volume, but his 42% accuracy is considerably lower than Mederos' 58%. Mederos also absorbs 4.58 significant strikes per minute and has defended roughly 82% of opponents' takedown attempts.
That defensive wrestling number is important. Jones' best route may be to force Mederos into extended grappling sequences, where his physicality and longer frame can become decisive. Jones is credited with connecting on 55% of his takedown attempts, compared with just 8% for Mederos. If Jones repeatedly gets Mederos to the fence and the mat, the favorite's price becomes much easier to justify.
Mederos, however, does not need to out-wrestle Jones. He needs to make the wrestling expensive. Mederos' game is built around clean striking, stance changes, calf kicks, straight punches, and lateral movement. His ability to switch stances, attack the legs, and land quick combinations from different angles could be useful against Jones because the Welshman wants to pressure forward and create exchanges where his volume and physicality can take over.
The 5-inch reach differential is the clearest obstacle for Mederos. Jones should be able to touch him with the jab and long combinations before Mederos can answer. But the shorter fighter has shown enough movement and accuracy to make that advantage less decisive than the raw measurements suggest.
Jones deserves to be favored. His wrestling gives him the clearest way to dictate where the fight takes place, and his reach advantage should help him win stretches of the striking battle. But Mederos has the kind of efficient, technically sound striking that can punish a high-output opponent, and his takedown defense gives him a reasonable chance of keeping the fight standing.
The most likely scenario is a competitive 15-minute fight in which Jones lands more total offense but Mederos produces the cleaner individual strikes. Jones could win two rounds through pressure and wrestling, but Mederos has enough accuracy and defensive ability to steal rounds at a much higher frequency than his price implies.
Jones remains the more likely winner, but the market is asking bettors to pay too much for that likelihood. Mederos does not need to prove he is the better fighter; he only needs to win more than 30% of the time to justify this price. Based on his accuracy, defensive wrestling, recent performances, and stylistic fit, I believe he clears that threshold.
