The 2026 World Baseball Classic continues the semifinal stage Monday night with a surprising pairing as Venezuela faces Italy at loanDepot Park in Miami. Venezuela arrives after a dramatic upset of defending champion Japan, while Italy continues a stunning run that has turned the tournament into one of the biggest international baseball surprises in years. Venezuela brings star power and one of the deepest lineups in the event, while Italy has thrived through timely hitting and its power hitters. Here, I break downt his semifinal matchup and make my Venezuela vs Italy prediction.
Game Snapshot
- Matchup: Venezuela vs Italy
- Date & Time: Monday, March 16, 8:00 PM
- Starting Pitchers: TBD for both teams
- Stadium: loanDepot Park, Miami

Key Storylines
- Venezuela reached the semifinal after an 8–5 victory over Japan that featured three home runs and dominant late relief pitching.
- Italy advanced by defeating Puerto Rico 8–6 and has remained undefeated throughout the tournament.
- Italy previously stunned the United States during pool play, proving the lineup can produce against elite competition.
- Both teams have shown offensive power, with multiple home runs in key games during the knockout stage.
- The winner moves to the championship game against the survivor of the United States vs Dominican Republic semifinal.
Pitching Matchup
Official starters were still being finalized at the time of this writing, which is common during the World Baseball Classic due to strict pitch limits. But the bullpens will likely be a bigger story than the starting pitchers on both sides heading into this game. Both teams have power bats that can put runs on the board in bunches, which should mean this game will come down to who can get key outs in high-leverage situations with the game on the line late.
Key Players
- Ronald Acuña Jr. – The Venezuelan superstar sparked the offense with a leadoff home run in the quarterfinal and remains one of the most dangerous hitters in the tournament.
- Wilyer Abreu – Delivered a pivotal three-run homer against Japan that changed the direction of the game.
- Maikel Garcia – Added a two-run homer in the quarterfinal and has provided consistent production in the middle of the order.
- Vinnie Pasquantino – A major contributor for Italy, helping lead the offense in the win over Puerto Rico. He is tied for the tournament lead in home runs with 3.
- Dante Nori – While not a household name, Nori has seven hits in this tournament so far, putting him in a tie for the third-most in the tournament behind Venezuela's Maikel Garcia and Canada's Abraham Toro.
Betting Trends
- Venezuela entered the tournament with roughly +900 championship odds.
- Italy opened as one of the longest-priced teams in the field with odds around +7000.
- Italy defeated Team USA earlier in the tournament in one of the event’s biggest surprises.
- Both teams have played several high-scoring games during the tournament.
Venezuela vs Italy Pick & Model Projection
- Score Projection: Venezuela 6 - Italy 4 ATS PRO
- Pick: Over 9.5 ATS PRO
- Confidence: 3 out of 5 ATS PRO
- Win Probability: Venezuela 63%, Italy 37% ATS PRO
My best bet for this World Baseball Classic semifinal is for the game to go over 9.5 runs scored. Both of these teams have been so dangerous offensively and they should continue to score in bunches in this contest at the expense of the pitching staffs of both of these teams. Look for these squads to combine to reach double-digits on the scoreboard, something that has happened in four of Italy's five games and three of Venezuela's five games at this tournament so far.
