The World Baseball Classic reaches the knockout stage with a marquee showdown as Team USA faces the Dominican Republic in Miami. Both clubs feature lineups filled with All-Star talent and power hitters capable of changing the game with one swing. The United States advanced after a tight win against Canada, while the Dominican Republic dominated its quarterfinal with a lopsided victory over Korea. With a spot in the championship game on the line, this USA vs Dominican Republic contest could be the best of the entire tournament.
The United States enters the semifinal after a 5-3 victory over Canada in the quarterfinal round. Logan Webb delivered 4.2 scoreless innings and the bullpen protected the lead late in the game. The American lineup did not hit a home run in that contest, yet still produced timely hits and capitalized on defensive mistakes.
The Dominican Republic arrives in Miami with perhaps the most intimidating lineup in the tournament. The team cruised to a 10-0 victory over South Korea in the quarterfinals. That game ended early due to the mercy rule after a three-run walk-off homer from Austin Wells. The Dominican offense has already tied a tournament record with 14 home runs, illustrating the explosive potential throughout the batting order.
Pitching will likely determine the outcome. The United States is expected to turn to Cy Young winner Paul Skenes, giving the Americans a high-end arm against the Dominican lineup. The Dominican Republic is set to go with Luis Severino on the bump. While their offense attracts most of the attention, their pitching depth has quietly been effective during the tournament. They will need that depth if things don't go well with Severino early.

This semifinal features two of the deepest rosters in the tournament. The Dominican Republic holds the edge in offensive depth, with several hitters capable of delivering game-changing power. However, the United States counters with elite starting pitching and a bullpen that has been reliable in close games.
The presence of Paul Skenes on the mound provides the biggest difference for this contest. He won't throw a full game or anything crazy during what is essentially spring training time. But he will get Team USA off to a good start, and the American bullpen has proven capable of protecting leads late in games. I am going to lay the runline with the USA, with the expectation that the Americans get out to a lead with a starting pitching advantage.
