St. Louis Cardinals vs San Diego Padres Prediction: Can Padres Catch Dodgers In NL West?

The St. Louis Cardinals head west to open a series against the San Diego Padres on Thursday night at Petco Park. Both clubs enter the matchup with similar records near the top of the National League standings, with both teams winning 3 of their last 5 games going into this series opener. Here, I break down this Cardinals vs Padres opener and make my pick for it in the betting markets.
Michael King has looked sharp through his opening stretch of the season. The right-hander enters this game with a 3-2 record, a 2.95 ERA, and 39 strikeouts across nearly 40 innings. He has allowed only three home runs all year and continues to miss bats with his slider and changeup combination. King has also pitched well at Petco Park, where San Diego’s spacious outfield gives fly-ball pitchers additional room for error.
If St. Louis goes with Liberatore, the left-hander brings a 4.50 ERA and has struggled at times with command, issuing 13 walks already this season. He has also surrendered eight home runs, which becomes dangerous against a Padres lineup beginning to find power production from multiple spots.
San Diego enters this opener with several factors pointing in its favor. King has been the steadier starter, the Padres' bullpen is in better shape, and the offense has shown signs of life over the past two games. Bogaerts finally looks comfortable at the plate, while Tatis continues to pressure opposing pitching every plate appearance. The recent surge from Ty France and Jackson Merrill also gives San Diego more depth through the middle of the lineup.
The Cardinals are capable of keeping this game competitive, but San Diego holds too many advantages to go against here. I'll take the Padres to win this game on the moneyline, though more risk-tolerant bettors will want to consider laying the runline with the home team.
