The knockout stage of the 2026 World Baseball Classic continues Saturday with Puerto Rico facing Italy in a quarterfinal game in Houston. Italy has been one of the tournament’s most surprising teams, rolling through pool play unbeaten and producing a powerful offense that has delivered big scoring totals in every game. Puerto Rico, long known for strong international baseball performances, arrives with a balanced roster and reliable pitching that helped secure a place in the knockout round. Here, I break down this matchup and bring you my Puerto Rico vs Italy prediction in the betting markets.
Game Snapshot
- Matchup: Puerto Rico vs Italy
- Date & Time: Saturday, March 14, 3:00 PM
- Starting Pitchers: Seth Lugo vs TBD (Italy)
- Stadium: Daikin Park, Houston, TX
- Broadcast: FS1
Key Storylines
- Italy enters the quarterfinal after finishing pool play with a perfect record and scoring at least 7 runs in every game.
- Puerto Rico secured its place in the knockout stage after a steady showing in group play despite losing their last group game to Canada.
- The winner moves on to the semifinal round of the 2026 World Baseball Classic.
- Depending on how you look at it, the loss to Canada may have been a good thing for Puerto Rico, as they drew Italy in the quarters instead of the USA. But with the way Italy is playing, that might not be the case after all.
Pitching Matchup
- Seth Lugo is set to get the start for the Puerto Rican national team. Lugo is a dependable MLB arm who should give his team every chance to advance to the semifinals if he is at or near his best.
- Puerto Rico has relied on a mix of experienced arms and bullpen depth throughout the tournament.
- Italy has yet to decide on a starting pitcher for this game. They don't have the same name recognition on the mound as Puerto Rico, but we could see someone like Sam Aldegheri or Dylan DeLucia take the hill here on a solid rest interval, which worked out for Italy the last time they both started.
Key Players
- Vinnie Pasquantino, Italy first baseman, delivered one of the most memorable performances of the tournament with a three-home run game in pool play.
- Italy’s lineup has produced several multi-run innings during the tournament. Hitters like Jac Caglianone have helped Pasquantino to deliver runs in bunches.
- Puerto Rico relies on a lineup built around disciplined plate appearances and situational hitting.
- Run production has been spread across several hitters rather than a single star carrying the offense for Team PR.
Puerto Rico vs Italy Pick & Model Projection
- Score Projection: Puerto Rico 5 - Italy 6 ATS PRO
- Pick: Italy Moneyline ATS PRO
- Confidence: 3 out of 5 ATS PRO
- Win Probability: Puerto Rico 46%, Italy 54% ATS PRO
Italy has turned into one of the biggest surprises of the 2026 World Baseball Classic. The lineup has produced runs in bunches throughout the tournament, and the confidence gained from an undefeated group stage can play a major role in a single-elimination game. When a lineup is producing at this level, even strong pitching can struggle to slow it down.
Puerto Rico has the tools to keep the game competitive, especially with a pitching staff capable of limiting big innings. Still, Italy’s offense has been the defining feature of its run so far, and that ability to generate quick scoring bursts gives the team an edge in a high-pressure environment. Expect a competitive contest with scoring opportunities for both sides, but Italy’s current form makes them my pick to advance to the semifinals.
