The Los Angeles Dodgers open a four-game NL West series against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday night at Chase Field in a matchup featuring two clubs that have played some of their best baseball in recent weeks. Los Angeles enters the game with a 38-21 record after a convincing 9-1 victory over Philadelphia on Sunday, while Arizona sits at 31-27 despite an extra-inning loss in Seattle on Sunday. The Dodgers are favorites going into this contest, and you will find my Dodgers vs Diamondbacks prediction for this series opener right here.
The Dodgers arrive in Arizona after another impressive stretch, winning 14 of their last 17 games and continuing to perform at an elite level offensively. Los Angeles ranks among the top run-producing teams in baseball, averaging more than 5 runs per game and carrying a .263 team batting average into the series.
Arizona has quietly become one of the hottest clubs in the National League as well. Before dropping a close game in Seattle on Sunday, the Diamondbacks had won 10 of their previous 11 contests. Chase Field has been a major advantage, with Arizona posting an 18-10 home record entering Monday's game.
The season series also favors Los Angeles. The Dodgers swept Arizona during the opening series of the season and will look to continue that success against a division rival that has climbed back into postseason contention.
Emmet Sheehan takes the ball for Los Angeles with a 3-1 record and a 4.70 ERA. While the ERA is higher than Dodgers fans would prefer, Sheehan has shown quality stuff with 59 strikeouts in 51.2 innings. The Dodgers have gone 7-3 in his starts this season, demonstrating their ability to support him with offense.
Arizona counters with Eduardo Rodriguez, who has been outstanding. The veteran left-hander enters at 5-1 with a 2.31 ERA and has consistently kept opponents off the scoreboard. Rodriguez has been one of the key reasons Arizona has climbed back into the NL playoff race.
On paper, Rodriguez owns the pitching edge. However, the Dodgers have consistently overcome strong opposing starters thanks to the depth of their lineup and one of the league's most productive offenses.
Rodriguez has clearly been the better pitcher statistically, and Arizona's home-field performance deserves respect. However, the Dodgers continue to find ways to win regardless of venue or pitching matchup. Their lineup depth creates scoring opportunities throughout the game, and they rarely rely on one or two hitters to carry the offense.
Los Angeles has consistently beaten quality opponents during its recent run and comes into Phoenix after an emphatic victory over Philadelphia. Expect a tight contest through the middle innings before the Dodgers' offense creates enough separation against Arizona's bullpen. My best bet for this game is to take the Dodgers on the moneyline as a road favorite.
