The Houston Astros and New York Yankees meet Thursday night at Yankee Stadium for the rubber match of a three-game series that has featured plenty of offense. Houston won the opener 9-7 before New York responded with a 9-3 victory Wednesday, setting up a decisive finale in the Bronx. The Yankees enter the game at 75-57, while the Astros are 66-67 and looking to avoid dropping another series as the regular season enters its final stretch.
The current Polymarket pricing makes the Yankees 61% favorites to win Thursday's game, with the Astros listed at 40%. The one-point difference above 100% reflects the live pricing structure of the prediction market rather than a traditional sportsbook hold. The market gives New York the edge at home, with Gerrit Cole scheduled to take the mound, while Houston counters with Hayden Wesneski.
The pricing also reflects the significant starting-pitching advantage New York appears to have on paper. Cole enters with a 7-6 record, 3.11 ERA and 1.07 WHIP across 92.2 innings, while Wesneski is 3-1 with a 4.23 ERA and 1.23 WHIP in 27.2 innings. Wesneski is still working his way back into a full-time role after Tommy John surgery, making Thursday's matchup an intriguing test against a Yankees lineup that scored nine runs Wednesday.

Thursday's game carries more weight than simply deciding the series. Houston has fallen to 66-67 after losing 10 of its last 16 games, while New York has won seven of its last nine and is trying to maintain momentum in the American League playoff race.
The first two games also demonstrated how quickly this matchup can turn into an offensive battle. Houston scored nine runs Tuesday, only for New York to answer with nine of its own Wednesday. The Yankees' latest outburst included a four-run seventh inning, with Cody Bellinger delivering a go-ahead two-run double before Spencer Jones and Jazz Chisholm Jr. added RBI hits. Luis García Jr. later provided a two-run homer.
Cole's return to the Yankees rotation has been one of the team's biggest storylines this season, and Thursday represents another important opportunity for the veteran right-hander. His 3.11 ERA and 100 strikeouts in 92.2 innings show that he has been effective, but Houston's lineup presents a considerably tougher challenge than many of the opponents he has faced during his return.
Cole also faces his former team, having last faced the Astros during the 2022 regular season. Houston has plenty of dangerous hitters, led by Yordan Alvarez, who entered Wednesday with 36 home runs and 91 RBI. Keeping Alvarez and the middle of Houston's order under control could determine whether Cole gives New York the length it needs in the finale.
The first two games produced 28 combined runs, but Thursday's pitching matchup could make another offensive explosion more difficult. Cole has been significantly better than Houston's staff by season-long ERA, while Wesneski is coming off a scoreless outing and will be facing a Yankees lineup still missing major power bats, including Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton.
Houston's bullpen situation is another factor. The Astros have dealt with increasing relief-pitcher workload as their starters have struggled to consistently work deep into games. That could become important if Wesneski exits early and Houston has to navigate the middle innings against New York's lineup.
After consecutive nine-run performances, another high-scoring game would hardly be surprising, but the presence of Cole gives Thursday's finale a different look. If he can establish his fastball and keep Houston's left-handed power in check, the Yankees have a strong opportunity to close the series with consecutive victories.
