The 2026 MLB season gets underway with an interleague clash as the Detroit Tigers head west to face the San Diego Padres on Thursday. With both teams opening their campaigns, this contest is a huge opportunity for both teams to open the year with a win. Before this matchup begins from Petco Park, I've broken down this matchup and made my Tigers vs Padres prediction here.
Tigers vs Padres Pick
- Pick: Padres ML
- Confidence: 3 out of 5
Game Snapshot
- Matchup: Detroit Tigers vs San Diego Padres
- Date & Time: Thursday, March 26, 2026, 4:10 PM
- Starting Pitchers: Tarik Skubal vs Nick Pivetta
- Stadium: Petco Park, San Diego, CA
- Broadcast: MLB.TV
Key Storylines
- Both of these teams enter the season with playoff aspirations. Both teams grabbed Wild Card spots last season and will try to build on those trips into October this year. For that to happen, wins in measuring stick games like this one will be crucial.
- The Padres were tied for the second-best home record in the National League last season at 52-29. Without that high level of performance at home, postseason baseball likely would have been a fantasy for them last year, making this home opener huge for San Diego.
Pitching Matchup
- Tarik Skubal returns as Detroit’s ace after posting a 2.21 ERA and 241 strikeouts last season.
- San Diego has opted to go with Nick Pivetta on the mound this season, who is capable, though not as good as Skubal.
- Skubal gives Detroit a clear edge on the mound early, especially in strikeout ability, but the Padres' offense could offset that advantage.
Key Players
- Riley Greene had a huge 2025 season for Detroit, hitting 36 home runs and 111 RBI. He ranked seventh in the league in RBI last season and he needs to get off to a strong start here to give Skubal some run support to work with.
- Jackson Merrill missed some time for the Padres last season and saw his batting average drop 30 points from the year before in 2025. Monitoring how he starts this season will be interesting as he looks to return to form.
- Fernando Tatis Jr. is the focal point of the offense for the Padres. His ability to hit for power is so important for the Padres to accomplish everything they hope to this year.
Tigers vs Padres Model Projection
- Score Projection: Tigers 3 - Padres 5
- Win Probability: Tigers 41%, Padres 59%
While Tarik Skubal gives Detroit a legitimate chance to control this game early, the overall roster comparison should move this matchup toward San Diego. The Padres bring a deeper and more productive lineup into this opener, backed by strong offensive metrics that include a higher projected batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage. Even if Skubal delivers a solid outing, the question becomes how much run support Detroit can provide against a Padres pitching staff that has been steady. I'm going to take the Padres to get the win at home to start their 2026 season in one of the best games on the Thursday schedule.
