Key Storylines
- The Diamondbacks have won the first two games of this series and they have the upper hand going into this series finale in Phoenix.
- Arizona is coming off an emotional comeback win, which could impact bullpen availability for both sides.
- The Tigers feature one of the league’s strongest pitching staffs, ranking near the top of the league in ERA last season.
Pitching Matchup
- Tarik Skubal posted a dominant 2.21 ERA with 241 strikeouts last season, establishing himself as a frontline ace. He threw six innings without allowing an earned run in his first start of the 2026 season.
- Zac Gallen recorded a 4.83 ERA and allowed more consistent contact, with opponents hitting .239 against him. He has an ERA of 9.00 after his first start of the 2026 campaign and he has to be better if the D-Backs want any shot at winning this game.
- Detroit’s bullpen gave up six runs in the eighth inning against the Diamondbacks on Tuesday and will try to bounce back here.
Key Players
- Riley Greene doubled and scored a run for the Tigers on Tuesday and will be counted on again in this game to generate offense.
- Corbin Carroll remains Arizona’s most dynamic hitter, driving in a run during their eighth-inning rally that helped them secure a comeback win on Tuesday.
- Jose Fernandez hit two home runs in his debut on Tuesday and his performance will be worth watching going into this one.

- Detroit is 3-2 to the over through five games.
Tigers vs Diamondbacks Model Projection
- Score Projection: Detroit Tigers 5 - Arizona Diamondbacks 3
- Win Probability: Detroit Tigers 61%, Arizona Diamondbacks 39%
Detroit’s advantage begins on the mound, where Tarik Skubal gives them a clear edge against Zac Gallen. Skubal’s strikeout ability and efficiency limit scoring opportunities, while Gallen’s higher ERA and contact rate leave him vulnerable against a Tigers lineup that can capitalize on mistakes. Even though Arizona’s offense has shown it can produce in bursts, relying on late rallies is not a sustainable path against elite pitching.
My expectation for this game is for the Tigers to win and cover the runline as a favorite on the road. Look for Skubal to have a nice start once again and for the Tigers to build an early lead offensively against the struggling Zac Gallen, with Detroit holding on this time after failing to do so on Tuesday.
