Cincinnati Reds vs Philadelphia Phillies Prediction: Phillies Aim For Sixth Straight Win

The Cincinnati Reds and Philadelphia Phillies continue their series Tuesday night at Citizens Bank Park with two clubs moving in different directions over the past week. Philadelphia has climbed back above .500 after another late comeback win Monday, while Cincinnati has dropped 5 of its last 7 games and continues to search for consistency from the bullpen and middle of the lineup. Here, I break down this Reds vs Phillies matchup and make my pick for it in the betting markets.
Philadelphia enters this game after another dramatic victory Monday, winning 5-4 on Bryson Stott’s late 2-run homer. The Phillies have now won five straight games and six straight series under interim manager Don Mattingly. Their offense has shown better balance recently, with Alec Bohm, Stott, Bryce Harper, and Adolis García all contributing during the current run.
Cincinnati, meanwhile, has struggled to close games late. The Reds briefly grabbed the lead in the eighth inning on Monday before the bullpen surrendered the advantage almost immediately. That has become a recurring issue for a pitching staff dealing with injuries and heavy workloads. Hunter Greene remains sidelined, while Emilio Pagán is also unavailable.
The biggest storyline on Tuesday centers on Chase Burns. The rookie right-hander has been outstanding with a 5-1 record, 1.87 ERA, and 55 strikeouts through 53 innings. Burns has quickly become Cincinnati’s most dependable starter and gives the Reds a major edge on the mound entering the game. Still, Philadelphia’s lineup has handled power pitching well during this winning streak, and the Phillies remain dangerous at home, especially in a hitter-friendly setting like Citizens Bank Park.
Burns has overpowered hitters with upper-90s velocity and swing-and-miss stuff. His 1.00 WHIP shows how difficult it has been for opponents to string together quality at-bats against him. Philadelphia’s veteran lineup will test his command early, particularly hitters like Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber, if Schwarber returns after missing Monday with an illness.
Jesus Luzardo’s season has been harder to evaluate. His 5.07 ERA looks concerning, though his 61 strikeouts in under 50 innings show that his raw stuff remains sharp. He has struggled with hard contact at times and can run into trouble once pitch counts climb. Cincinnati’s lineup has enough speed and athleticism to pressure him if Elly De La Cruz and Matt McLain reach base consistently.
Chase Burns gives Cincinnati a strong chance to control the first half of the game, and the rookie has shown enough with his stuff to limit damage against Philadelphia’s power bats. Still, the Phillies are playing with confidence right now, and their lineup continues producing key hits late in games. I think we're in for a very close game with all that in mind, but I think that the starting pitching advantage for the Reds will be too much for Philadelphia to overcome.
