The international baseball spotlight turns to Asia on Wednesday as the Chinese Taipei national baseball team faces the Australia national baseball team in pool play at the World Baseball Classic. With both clubs aiming to secure early positioning in the standings, this matchup carries significant weight as the tournament opener. Chinese Taipei enters with a deep lineup built around contact hitters and power bats from Nippon Professional Baseball and CPBL, while Australia leans on Major League Baseball–affiliated arms and a disciplined approach at the plate. Here, I break down this contest and make my Chinese Taipei vs Australia prediction.
Pick: Chinese Taipei -2.5 runs ATS PRO
Confidence: 3.5 out of 5
Right-hander Jo-Hsi Hsu gets the ball for Chinese Taipei to start this tournament, who plays his club ball for Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks of Nippon Professional Baseball. He could turn out to be one of the hidden gems of this tournament, as he hasn't been seen by most Americans, but can throw heat and could get his team off to a great start here.
On the bump for Australia is Alexander Wells, who pitches for the East Belmont Saints of the Geelong Baseball Association. Wells spent time with the Baltimore Orioles previously in his career, but that was a long time ago and he will have to prove himself right away in this tournament.
Chinese Taipei holds the edge in lineup depth, run production, and starting pitching stability. This game will come down to which team can stay poised in an international competition that is still in its relative infancy. But I think that Chinese Taipei will run away with this game behind a solid starting pitching performance, and I'll lay the runline with Chinese Taipei in this opener.
