COLLEGE FOOTBALL
Rutgers has a direct path to clearing this spread through its best returning players. Raymond rushed 244 times for 1,241 yards, averaged 5.1 yards per carry, and scored 15 total touchdowns in 2025. Duff caught 60 passes for 1,084 yards and seven scores while averaging 18.1 yards per reception. Lonergan, the new starter after transferring from Boston College, completed 66.9% of his passes for 2,025 yards, 12 touchdowns, and five interceptions last season. That gives Rutgers an experienced quarterback with efficient recent production, plus a 1,000-yard running back and a 1,000-yard receiver. UMass allowed 433.8 yards per game, 6.3 yards per play, and 62 offensive touchdowns across 12 games in 2025. Opponents ran for 221.3 yards per game and 30 touchdowns, which gives Raymond an excellent setup behind an experienced Rutgers line. UMass also allowed opposing passers to complete 67.3% of their throws with 29 touchdowns against four interceptions. Rutgers does not need unusual turnover luck to reach the high 30s or low 40s. The greater concern is whether UMass can score enough to stay inside 29.5, and its 2025 offense exceeded 14 points against just two opponents, one of them an FCS program. Rutgers also scored 60 points against Norfolk State and 45 against Miami (Ohio) in nonconference play last season, showing it can extend margins against lower-level opposition.
Rutgers finished 5-7 overall and 2-7 in the Big Ten in 2025. Its offense was productive enough to support a winning season, scoring 28.7 points per game and averaging 266.1 passing yards. The defense prevented that, allowing 31.8 points, 432.8 yards, and 209.9 rushing yards per game. The Scarlet Knights closed with a 42-9 loss at Ohio State and a 40-36 home loss to Penn State, though Raymond produced 189 rushing yards and two touchdowns in the finale while Duff recorded 127 receiving yards. A new defensive coordinator takes over a unit that must improve, but UMass offers a far easier opening assignment than Rutgers faced during that late Big Ten stretch. UMass went 0-12 overall and 0-8 in the MAC, was outscored 463-133, and lost by an average of 27.5 points. Its offense completed 53.7% of its passes for 165.1 yards per game and produced eight passing touchdowns. The ground game averaged 2.8 yards per carry and scored six times. Brandon Rose is the most productive returning passer from last year’s group after completing 52 of 88 attempts for 424 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions. The quarterback room also added Pop Watson III, who brings 558 career passing yards from Virginia Tech. Rocko Griffin returns after rushing for 245 yards and two touchdowns, while transfer Justin Williams-Thomas arrives after gaining 197 yards on 35 carries at Marshall. Those additions raise the floor, but they do not erase a large efficiency and roster-quality gap in the opener.
Rutgers should control the line of scrimmage with Raymond attacking a UMass run defense that surrendered 221.3 yards per game, while Lonergan can use Duff against a unit that allowed 29 passing touchdowns. UMass has added experienced players, but its 2025 offense scored 11.1 points per game, averaged 3.9 yards per play, and produced only 15 offensive touchdowns all season. Rutgers’ own defensive problems keep this from receiving a higher confidence grade, and a spread this large carries fourth-quarter exposure if the Scarlet Knights turn to reserves. Even so, the home team’s offensive advantages should be enough to build a decisive lead and clear the current line. The prediction is Rutgers 42, UMass 10, making Rutgers -29.5 at -110 the recommended bet and placing the projected total at 52, slightly below the posted 53.5.
