COLLEGE FOOTBALL
This is a classic nonconference mismatch where the stronger roster usually dictates pace, but the betting market has still left room on the total. Houston’s offense produced 33 points and 533 total yards in its first game, with 305 passing yards, 228 rushing yards, and 7.3 yards per play. Southern has been respectable on offense through two games, scoring 25.5 points per game and averaging 353.5 total yards, but the Jaguars’ defense has already allowed 22.5 points per game and 364.5 yards per game. That combination points to a game in which Houston can score efficiently without needing to press all the way through four quarters.
Houston has the cleaner recent form after opening the year with a win and showing strong balance in the passing and running game. Christian Johnson’s passing efficiency and the Cougars’ ability to generate explosive plays make them hard to stop when they avoid negative plays. Southern’s early-season offense has been steady, with 187.0 passing yards per game and 166.5 rushing yards per game, but the Jaguars are giving up more than 5.0 yards per play and have not yet shown the same defensive ceiling. If Houston’s defensive front can force Southern into longer passing downs, the visitors may have trouble keeping drives alive.
Houston should control this game from start to finish and win comfortably, but the better betting angle is the under because the Cougars can get ahead early, then manage the second half while Southern has a hard time generating enough scoring to lift the total. A projected final score of Houston 44, Southern 13 fits that script and keeps the game below the market number.
