The BYU Cougars will put their unbeaten record on the line against the West Virginia Mountaineers on Friday night. The Cougars are heavy favorites at home in this Big 12 matchup and will try to avoid an upset against a Mountaineers team that has already pulled off an upset over a rival this season. Before kickoff from Provo, continue reading to get my West Virginia vs BYU prediction.
BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier has been a standout performer in leading the Cougars to a 4-0 start. In their recent 24-21 road victory over Colorado, Bachmeier threw for 179 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 98 yards. He has six touchdown passes and has yet to throw an interception so far this season and will attempt to avoid throwing his first pick in this game.
West Virginia's offense has struggled, especially in their recent 48-14 loss to Utah. The Mountaineers have yet to find consistent quarterback play with Nicco Marchiol, who has just two touchdown passes and two interceptions through five games. The Mountaineers need more from the quarterback position to be more competitive moving forward.
BYU's defense has been exceptional, ranking first nationally in fewest yards allowed per play (3.5) and tied for first in points allowed per game (5.3). Their ability to limit opponents' scoring and yardage has been a key factor in their undefeated start.
West Virginia's defense got off to a solid start in their first three games of the season. But they have allowed 44.5 points per game against Big 12 opponents this year. They will need to improve their defensive performance to keep this game competitive.
I think we will see BYU's great start to the season continue at home in this contest. West Virginia has not shown an ability to generate consistent offense away from home this year and they have been demolished by the Big 12 competition they have faced so far. BYU should win this game by at least 21 points at home, as they will remain unbeaten and start to generate some mid-season College Football Playoff hype in Provo.
