LSU vs Ole Miss Prediction: Lane Kiffin Returns to Oxford

No. 7 LSU and No. 8 Ole Miss meet Saturday night in Oxford with both teams 2-0 and opening SEC play. LSU has won 51-10 over Clemson and 45-14 over Louisiana Tech, while Ole Miss followed a 41-38 win over Louisville with a 41-9 victory over Charlotte. Lane Kiffin’s first trip back to Oxford as LSU’s head coach adds another layer of intrigue to this matchup, but the game itself is strong enough to stand on its own without that storyline involved.
Why Our Model Sees Value:
“LSU’s defensive front and early-season efficiency create a larger matchup advantage than the current 59% price reflects, even if the sentimental argument in this game is in favor of Ole Miss getting revenge on Lane Kiffin.”
LSU Favored In the Kiffin Bowl
Polymarket currently prices LSU at 59% to win and Ole Miss at 41%. The point spread market is sitting around LSU -3 with a total of 58.5 points. That is a fair starting point for a top-10 road game, especially with Ole Miss riding a 13-game home winning streak. Still, I make LSU 64% to win, which creates a 5% edge on the Tigers at the current price.
LSU's Defense Should Stand Tall
The Tigers have allowed just 285 total yards through two games, an average of 142.5 per game, while producing 11 sacks and holding opponents to 4 conversions on 27 third-down attempts. Ole Miss has been productive at 454.0 yards and 41.0 points per game, but LSU is the first defense on its schedule with this kind of speed and disruption up front. My projected score is LSU 31, Ole Miss 24.

This is the matchup that should decide the game and the outcome of our LSU vs Ole Miss prediction. Chambliss has completed 71.0% of his passes for 561 yards, 5 touchdowns and 1 interception through two games. He has been efficient and comfortable, and Ole Miss has protected him well. Princewill Umanmielen and the Tigers’ front recorded 7 sacks against Louisiana Tech after holding Clemson to 145 total yards in the opener.
Chambliss can punish pressure if lanes open, so LSU cannot simply rush without discipline. The goal will be to squeeze the pocket, keep him from escaping cleanly and force quicker throws before routes fully develop.
Leavitt has shown why LSU was so aggressive in building around him and why LSU is one of the favorites in the SEC championship futures market. He threw for 230 yards against Clemson, then posted 344 passing yards against Louisiana Tech. He has also scored 5 rushing touchdowns through two games.
Leavitt threw 3 interceptions against Louisiana Tech, all in the first half, and LSU committed 4 turnovers before pulling away. Ole Miss has enough offensive quality to turn short fields into points. If Leavitt protects the ball, LSU has the more complete team. If he gives Ole Miss extra possessions, the home crowd becomes a major factor.
Lacy’s health was a talking point after a leg bruise against Louisville, but he returned against Charlotte and ran for 87 yards and 2 touchdowns on 13 carries. He now has 148 rushing yards and 3 scores this season. His ability to keep LSU from focusing entirely on Chambliss is essential.
Ole Miss is averaging 454.0 total yards per game, with 314.5 coming through the air. LSU’s defense has been far harder to move, especially on the ground. If the Rebels cannot create efficient early-down runs, they will be asking Chambliss to beat a deep LSU pass rush in obvious passing situations.
Ole Miss has enough skill talent and home-field advantage to keep this close, and Pete Golding knows Kiffin’s offensive tendencies from their years together in Oxford. The difference is LSU’s defense. Through two games, the Tigers have combined elite pressure with very little room on the ground, giving them a cleaner path to controlling the key downs.
Ole Miss should land some explosive plays, but LSU has more ways to recover from mistakes. If Leavitt keeps the turnover count under control, the Tigers should create enough pressure on Chambliss to win the late possessions and leave Oxford with a 3-0 record.
