Florida State vs Louisville Prediction & Preview: Can FSU Snap Its 10-Game Road Skid?

Updated October 7, 2026

The Florida State Seminoles and Louisville Cardinals meet Friday night for an ACC matchup at L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium, with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m. ET on ESPN.
Florida State enters off a dominant 38-7 win over 2025 ACC runner-up Virginia, easing some of the pressure around Mike Norvell. Louisville, meanwhile, entered the season as a potential ACC contender but has now dropped back-to-back conference games and already has three losses entering Week 6.
So, who has the edge in the first meeting between Norvell and Jeff Brohm since the 2023 ACC Championship Game? In my Florida State vs Louisville prediction, I’m backing the Cardinals -3.5 to get some revenge at home, and I’ll break down why below.
Why Our Model Sees Value:

“I’m backing the Cards to cover -3.5 at home against FSU. This feels like a classic buy-low, sell-high spot, with Florida State coming off its best performance of the season and Louisville losing back-to-back games by a field goal. I expect the Cards to score plenty against an inconsistent FSU defense, and Louisville may only need to get a few stops and force a turnover or two to create some separation. With FSU also riding a 10-game road losing streak under Norvell, I like Louisville to win and cover the number.”
Polymarket Pricing
Louisville -3.5 is currently trading at 51¢ on Polymarket, while our model gives the Cardinals a 56.8% chance of covering. That gives us a 5.8% edge at the current price, with the model projecting a 34-28 Louisville win.
Louisville’s Offense Has a Clear Advantage
Louisville ranks second in the ACC with 486.0 yards per game and 7.5 yards per play, while Lincoln Kienholz has completed 69.1% of his passes with a 9-to-1 TD-to-INT ratio. FSU looked much better defensively against Virginia, but Jeff Brohm’s offense presents a much tougher test.
Florida State May Not Exploit Louisville’s Biggest Weakness
Louisville’s pass defense ranks 130th nationally at 266.8 yards allowed per game, but FSU may not be built to take full advantage. Ashton Daniels has completed just 60.3% of his passes with six touchdowns and six interceptions, and even against Virginia, he did most of his damage on the ground.

There’s no way around it: Louisville’s pass defense has been flat-out bad so far this season.
The Cardinals are allowing 266.8 passing yards per game, 130th nationally, while giving up 8.0 yards per attempt and 14 completions of 25-plus yards through five games. NC State's CJ Bailey just threw for a career-high 373 yards against them last week.
That makes Ashton Daniels one of the biggest players to watch Friday night. He’s been a bit inconsistent through the air, but he’s still averaging over 8.0 yards per attempt and has shown the ability to create explosive plays when given time. His mobility also gives Louisville another element to account for if the Cardinals struggle to get pressure.
It didn’t help that Louisville was without starting safety Koen Entringer against NC State, and his status could be important as the Cardinals look for a much better performance on the back end.
Another key matchup will be Florida State’s pass rush against Louisville’s offensive line. The Seminoles are coming off their best performance up front all season, piling up 10 sacks and 12 tackles for loss against Virginia. The 10 sacks tied for the most by an ACC team in a conference game since at least 2005.
Louisville has done a decent job keeping Lincoln Kienholz upright, but he has still taken 10 sacks through five games, including three in each of the last two. That pressure could be especially important against a quarterback who has been dangerous when given time, averaging 10.0 yards per attempt and 0.46 PPA per dropback so far this season.
Kienholz can also make plays with his legs, rushing for 158 yards and six touchdowns, but he has been dealing with an injury and is currently listed as probable for Friday. Keeping Kienholz under pressure and uncomfortable in the pocket will be key for FSU’s defense.
Louisville’s 2-3 record may be a little misleading. All three losses have come by exactly three points, including a 41-38 loss to an Ole Miss team that has been ranked as high as No. 4 this season.
The box scores tell a similar story. Louisville averaged 6.9 yards per play to Ole Miss’ 6.3, essentially matched Wake Forest in total yardage and then averaged 8.8 yards per play to NC State’s 5.9 last week. The Cardinals put up 485 yards against the Wolfpack but lost three fumbles that NC State turned into 18 points.
Close losses have also become a bit of a trend under Jeff Brohm, with seven of Louisville’s last eight losses coming by three points or fewer.
Even Mike Norvell acknowledged it this week, calling Louisville “probably the best three-loss team in the country.” The Cardinals haven’t been getting dominated; they just need to find a way to turn one of these close games into a win.
I’m saying no. Florida State’s road losing streak has now reached 10 games, and the Seminoles have gone more than 1,000 days without winning a true road game. FSU looked much better against Virginia, but repeating that defensive performance against Louisville’s offense will be a much tougher ask.
Our Florida State vs Louisville model projection also favors the Cardinals in this matchup, and there’s a potential look-ahead spot for FSU with a trip to No. 4 Miami coming next Saturday.
My bigger concern is actually Louisville’s mindset. Back-to-back three-point losses have likely ended any realistic ACC Championship or College Football Playoff hopes, and we saw the Cardinals struggle in a similar spot last season. After dropping consecutive conference games to Cal and Clemson by a combined four points, Louisville went on the road and got blown out 38-6 by SMU.
Still, I think a bounce-back performance from Jeff Brohm’s team is more likely here. Louisville is 6-1 in Friday night games under Brohm, and I think the Cardinals have enough advantages offensively to hand FSU its 11th straight road loss and make Mike Norvell’s hot seat even hotter.
