No. 7 Alabama travels to Starkville on Saturday for one of the most interesting SEC games of the week against No. 16 Mississippi State. Both teams are 4-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play, making this matchup incredibly important in the early SEC standings. Alabama arrives after a 49-18 win over South Carolina, while Mississippi State just beat then-No. 19 Missouri 31-24 at Davis Wade Stadium.
Why Our Model Sees Value:

“Alabama has been far more dominant on the scoreboard than its recent defensive performances suggest, while Mississippi State has the quarterback play and downfield passing game to keep this within one score.”
High-Scoring Game Expected
Polymarket currently prices Mississippi State +5.5 at 51¢, with Alabama -5.5 at 50¢. Alabama is also priced at 67¢ to win outright, compared with 34¢ for Mississippi State. The total sits at 59.5, with the over priced at 53¢. Those numbers indicate that traders expect Alabama to win more often than not but see the spread as close to a true 50-50 proposition in what should be a high-scoring game.
Alabama Wins a Close Game
My projection gives Mississippi State a 55.5% chance to stay inside +5.5, creating a 4.5% edge over the current 51% implied probability. Alabama remains my pick to win the game, with a projected score around 34-31, but the Bulldogs have enough offensive production to make more than one possession of separation difficult. The current 51¢ price is attractive, and I would still consider Mississippi State playable up to 54¢.

Both programs enter undefeated in SEC play, so the winner stays near the front of a crowded conference race in the SEC futures market. Alabama is ranked No. 7 after four victories, while Mississippi State has climbed to No. 16 following its first 4-0 start since 2014. For the Bulldogs, beating another ranked opponent at home would strengthen an already impressive opening month.
The quarterbacks are the main reason this game has shootout potential. Alabama sophomore Keelon Russell has completed 70.9% of his passes for 1,129 yards, eight touchdowns and two interceptions. He has added 168 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Russell was excellent against South Carolina, throwing for 365 yards and four touchdowns without an interception.
Mississippi State counters with Kamario Taylor, who has been even more productive statistically. Taylor has thrown for 1,192 yards and 14 touchdowns with two interceptions while completing 69.2% of his attempts. He also has 185 rushing yards. Against Missouri, he completed 27 of 38 passes for 360 yards and three touchdowns.
Mississippi State is averaging 43 points and 533.2 yards per game, including 315.5 passing yards. Its 7.5 yards per play also exceeds Alabama's 7.1. Running back Fluff Bothwell gives the Bulldogs another route to production with 402 rushing yards at 5.5 yards per carry entering this matchup.
The matchup becomes more interesting after Alabama allowed South Carolina to gain 419 yards last week, including 216 on the ground. Alabama still won comfortably because Russell generated explosive scores and the defense created a touchdown of its own, but Mississippi State has a much more productive passing attack than the Gamecocks brought to Tuscaloosa.
Alabama remains the stronger team by several measures. The Crimson Tide average 48 points and 471.5 yards per game while allowing 20.2 points. They also own a plus-five turnover margin, compared with minus-one for Mississippi State. If Taylor gives Alabama extra possessions, the Tide have enough offensive talent to turn a tight game into a comfortable win quickly.
Alabama should score, but laying 5.5 points on the road against a Mississippi State offense producing more than 500 yards per game is a different proposition from simply predicting the outright winner. Taylor's downfield passing and Bothwell's rushing give the Bulldogs multiple ways to answer Alabama scores. The Tide have the higher ceiling, but Mississippi State +5.5 at 51¢ offers the better value at the current Polymarket pricing.
