Key Storylines
- Illinois form surge: The Illini have won 9 straight, including an 88-82 win at No. 4 Purdue behind a historic 46-point eruption from freshman Keaton Wagler.
- Backcourt health: Illinois senior guard Kylan Boswell fractured his right hand on January 20 and is expected to return in mid-February, while Ty Rodgers remains out long term. Those injuries could hurt them at some point, but they haven't hurt the Illini yet.
- Washington injuries: Senior guard Desmond Claude has stepped away due to a lingering ankle issue, Wesley Yates III is out indefinitely after wrist surgery, and Mady Traore is out for the season. Jacob Ognacevic recently returned to bolster the frontcourt for the Huskies, but that might not be enough to upset Illinois.
- Stars to watch: Washington’s Hannes Steinbach averages 17.5 points and 11.2 rebounds. He will be the focal point for the Huskies again in this game. Illinois’ Wagler is their primary player from a scoring and playmaking perspective during Boswell’s absence, while David Mirkovic provides size and rebounding.

Final Thoughts
Illinois checks every key box here. They have superior depth even without Boswell, elite recent form, and a decisive edge against a Washington group missing proven perimeter firepower. The Huskies’ best path is a monster Steinbach outing plus Diallo finding gaps in transition, but Illinois has been suffocating second-chance looks and forcing opponents into low-percentage half-court possessions in Champaign. I will lay the points with the Illini in this matchup on Thursday night.
