The NCAA Tournament rolls into the second round with an intriguing clash between VCU and Illinois on Saturday night. One team arrives fresh off a statement upset, while the other delivered one of the most dominant performances of the opening round. Before tip-off from South Carolina, you will find my VCU vs Illinois prediction ahead of the first Saturday of March Madness in 2026.

VCU enters this contest with confidence after an 82-78 overtime win against North Carolina. The Rams showed composure late and leaned on elite guard play to pull off the upset. That victory pushed their record to 28-7 and highlighted their ability to compete with high-level opponents.
Illinois, meanwhile, looked dominant in its 105-70 win over Penn. The Illini exploded offensively, surpassing the 100-point mark and showcasing their depth and efficiency. With a 25-8 record and a No. 3 seed, Illinois has both the talent and experience edge in this matchup.
The key question centers on pace. VCU prefers to grind games down with defense and ball pressure, while Illinois thrives in a faster tempo with strong shooting and rebounding. Whichever team dictates style will likely control the outcome.
Illinois Fighting Illini
VCU Rams
Stat | VCU | Illinois |
|---|---|---|
Points per game | 81.6 | 85.0 |
Points allowed per game | 71.1 | 69.8 |
Team Field Goal % | 46% | 46% |
Rebounds Per Game | 36.7 | 40.9 |
Assists Per Game | 14.0 | 14.7 |
Illinois enters this game with a clear offensive edge and a size advantage that should show up on the boards. The Illini’s ability to stretch the floor and score in bunches was evident in their first-round performance, and that firepower is difficult to contain over 40 minutes. Mirkovic’s presence inside creates mismatches that VCU may struggle to counter.
That said, VCU is not an easy out. The Rams’ defensive discipline and guard play give them a path to keep this game competitive, especially if Hill continues his strong play. Their ability to slow tempo and force turnovers could disrupt Illinois at times.
My best bet for this matchup is for the game to go over 151.5 points. Both of these offenses are dangerous and should stay that way, while Illinois keeps the tempo high enough to get us to the total on Saturday night.
