Key Storylines
- UMass is 9-6 overall but 0-3 in Mid-American play and struggling to find consistency in league action. Last time out, UMass lost 101-100 in overtime against the Bowling Green Falcons, led by Leonardo Bettiol’s 32-point effort. UMass looked great offensively in that game, but couldn’t buy a stop when they needed one the most.
- Ohio sits at 8-7 overall and 2-1 in MAC games, winning two straight league games after dropping their MAC opener to Bowling Green. Ohio has been solid at home with a 5-3 record in Athens, and can capitalize on home court advantage against a UMass squad that is still searching for its first conference win.
- UMass has played only one true road game so far this season. That came against Eastern Michigan in conference play, with the Minutemen losing that contest on December 30. This is another chance for UMass to get its first road win of the season, but that will not be an easy task against a very good Ohio team.
- Early in the MAC season, there are five teams with records of 2-0 or 3-0. That makes a game like this one very important for both UMass and Ohio. Another loss here would put the losing team either two games back of the leaders in the loss column, or four games back in the loss column if UMass was to lose. We should see two desperate basketball teams here.
