The Mid-American Conference tournament always produces drama, and Saturday’s championship game between Toledo and Akron brings two of the league’s strongest programs together with an NCAA Tournament berth on the line. Akron has been one of the most consistent teams in the MAC this season thanks to an efficient offense and elite guard play. Toledo, meanwhile, has shown the ability to push the pace and score in bunches, making this Toledo vs Akron clash worth watching with or without the NCAA Tournament implications.
Akron Zips
Toledo Rockets
Stat | Toledo | Akron |
|---|---|---|
Points per game | 81.3 | 89.1 |
Points allowed per game | 76.5 | 73.4 |
Team Field Goal % | 49% | 51% |
Rebounds Per Game | 34.1 | 38.1 |
Assists Per Game | 15.9 | 18.8 |
Akron enters this contest with the more complete roster and a clear advantage in offensive efficiency. The Zips shoot the ball at a higher rate and share it exceptionally well, ranking among the national leaders in assists. Tavari Johnson’s scoring and playmaking create constant pressure on opposing defenses, and Amani Lyles provides a reliable interior presence.
Toledo has the scoring ability to stay competitive, especially if its perimeter shooters get hot early. However, the Rockets’ defensive numbers remain a concern against an Akron team that moves the ball well and converts at a high percentage from the field. Akron also owns a rebounding edge that should lead to additional scoring opportunities.
I am going to lay the points with the Zips in this game, who were the favorite to win this tournament going in, despite the incredible season Miami (OH) has had. Look for them to be an automatic qualifier from what should be a two-bid MAC this season.
