The second round of the NCAA Tournament includes an all-Texas matchup as Texas A&M meets Houston on Saturday. The Aggies arrive with confidence after a strong defensive showing in their opener, while Houston looks every bit like a title contender following a dominant first-round performance. With a trip to the Sweet 16 on the line, this Texas A&M vs Houston matchup will be interesting from start to finish.

Texas A&M advanced with a convincing 63-50 win over Saint Mary’s, using relentless full-court pressure to force 18 turnovers. Head coach Bucky McMillan has quickly implemented an aggressive identity, and the Aggies thrive on creating chaos and converting it into points. That approach will be tested against one of the most disciplined teams in the country.
Houston enters this game after a 78-47 dismantling of Idaho, showcasing elite ability on both ends of the floor. The Cougars shot 50% from the field and controlled the glass with a wide rebounding margin. More importantly, their defense continues to be among the best nationally, allowing around 63 points per game this season. Houston’s ability to dictate tempo could neutralize Texas A&M’s pressure.
The key question is whether Texas A&M can speed up Houston. If the Cougars settle into their half-court rhythm, they become extremely difficult to beat. If the Aggies force turnovers early, this could turn into a much tighter contest than the seeding suggests.
Houston Cougars
Texas A&M Aggies
Stat | Texas A&M | Houston |
|---|---|---|
Points per game | 87.0 | 77.2 |
Points allowed per game | 78.7 | 62.4 |
Field Goal % | 46% | 45% |
Rebounds per game | 37.5 | 36.9 |
Assists per game | 18.0 | 14.5 |
Houston’s defensive discipline and rebounding edge stand out in this matchup. The Cougars rarely beat themselves, and that is critical against a team that depends on forcing mistakes. While Texas A&M’s pressure can disrupt many opponents, Houston’s guard play and composure should limit turnovers and control the pace. With that said, I think the Aggies will do just enough to cover the number as a 10.5-point underdog on Saturday evening.
