The opening round of the 2026 NCAA Tournament features an intriguing clash between a mid-major and a battle-tested Big Ten contender. North Dakota State enters the tournament after a strong season in the Summit League, leaning on efficient offense and balanced scoring to reach March. Waiting on the other side is Michigan State, a program known for its postseason presence and physical style of basketball. The Spartans have spent the season navigating one of the toughest conferences in college basketball, giving them a clear strength of schedule edge going into this North Dakota State vs Michigan State matchup.

Michigan State enters the tournament after navigating the physical grind of Big Ten play. The Spartans finished the regular season with 25 wins and remained competitive against several ranked opponents. Their defensive identity has been a constant theme, with the team relying on rebounding and half-court execution to wear down opponents.
North Dakota State arrives with plenty of confidence after dominating its conference slate. The Bison averaged more than 80 points per game during the season and regularly created open looks from the perimeter. Their ability to space the floor and share the ball allowed them to maintain one of the more efficient offenses among mid-major programs.
The central question for this matchup revolves around pace and physicality. North Dakota State prefers a quicker offensive rhythm built around outside shooting and ball movement. Michigan State, on the other hand, often slows the tempo and forces opponents to score against set defense. If the Spartans control the glass and keep the game in the half-court, their size advantage could become decisive.
Michigan State Key Players
North Dakota State Key Players
Stat | North Dakota State | Michigan State |
|---|---|---|
Points per game | 80.7 | 78.9 |
Team Field Goal % | 47% | 47% |
Rebounds Per Game | 36.4 | 39.8 |
Assists Per Game | 15.5 | 18.5 |
North Dakota State deserves credit for the offensive balance it showed throughout the season. The Bison shoot the ball well and rarely beat themselves with turnovers. That combination gives them a chance to hang around early, especially if their perimeter shooting is sharp.
However, the difference in competition level is difficult to overlook. Michigan State has spent the entire season playing against elite athletes and physical defenses inside the Big Ten. That experience usually translates well in the opening round of the tournament. The Spartans also carry a clear rebounding advantage and greater depth in the frontcourt. I'm going to lay the points with Sparty in this contest to open the NCAA Tournament for both teams.
