The rivalry between North Carolina and Duke closes the regular season with another chapter inside Cameron Indoor Stadium on Saturday night. Duke enters the game as the number one team in the country with a 28-2 record and a long winning run that has kept the Blue Devils firmly at the top of the national rankings. North Carolina arrives at 24-6 and has already proved earlier this season that it can beat its rival, stunning Duke 71-68 in Chapel Hill with a last-second three from Seth Trimble. Here, I break down another entry in the North Carolina vs Duke rivalry and make my prediction for the game below.
Pick: Duke -17.5 ATS PRO
Confidence: 3 out of 5
Duke continues to look like the most complete team in college basketball. The Blue Devils have piled up wins behind a defense that regularly holds opponents under 65 points while maintaining a balanced scoring attack. Their recent stretch includes dominant wins over Notre Dame and Virginia, along with a huge non-conference win over the Michigan Wolverines.
North Carolina enters the rivalry game dealing with a major loss. Freshman forward Caleb Wilson, the team’s leading scorer and rebounder, suffered a thumb injury that ended his season. Wilson averaged 19.8 points and 9.4 rebounds while shooting nearly 58% from the field. Without him, the Tar Heels must rely more heavily on guards and perimeter shooting.
The first meeting showed that the rivalry can produce unpredictable results. North Carolina rallied in the second half and stole a 71-68 win in Chapel Hill. Duke now has a chance to answer on its home floor while also gaining momentum before postseason play.
Stat | North Carolina | Duke |
|---|---|---|
Points per game | 80.4 | 83.2 |
Points allowed per game | 70.9 | 62.5 |
Team Field Goal % | 47% | 50% |
Rebounds Per Game | 38.3 | 40.0 |
Assists Per Game | 16.1 | 17.3 |
Score Projection: North Carolina 67 – Duke 87 ATS PRO
Win Probability: North Carolina 9%, Duke 91% ATS PRO
Rivalry games often tighten up regardless of rankings, but Duke enters this one with a clear advantage. The Blue Devils are playing at an elite level on both ends of the court and have been dominant at Cameron Indoor Stadium. North Carolina already proved it can beat Duke once this season, yet the loss of Caleb Wilson removes a major piece of the Tar Heels' offense and rebounding. With Duke rolling into the postseason and looking for revenge after the earlier defeat, the Blue Devils are my bet to cover the spread as a heavy favorite.
