New Mexico State comes into this conference matchup with momentum after opening CUSA play with a win over Sam Houston. The Aggies have one of the nation’s better defensive units, limiting opponents to just 65.5 points per game while ranking in the top 30 in the country in scoring defense. The Aggies hold a dominant historical edge in this series, leading the all-time head-to-head series 8-1 and winning both meetings last season. The Aggies will try to use their defense to continue their winning ways against the Panthers.
FIU has shown offensive firepower, putting up 88.1 points per game and ranking inside the top 40 nationally in scoring offense. The Panthers also excel in creating turnovers and rank near the top of the country in steals and turnovers forced. That defensive pressure, combined with strong rebounding and home-court advantage could lead to a challenge for the Aggies on the road.
FIU’s most recent performance saw Eric Dibami post 21 points and nine rebounds in the loss to Liberty and Corey Stephenson is a weapon for the Panthers as well. The Panthers are 0-1 in Conference USA play and they will try to even their record at 1-1 with a victory in this matchup.
Score Projection: New Mexico State 79 – Florida International 75
Win Probability: New Mexico State 54%, Florida International 46%
I am going to take New Mexico State to get the win and cover the spread in this Conference USA matchup against FIU. The Aggies have lost their only true road game of the season against Abilene Christian. But they should get to 1-1 on the road here against an FIU team that ranks outside of the top 200 in Division I in defensive efficiency, according to KenPom.
