The ACC Tournament continues Thursday night with a quarterfinal matchup between Clemson and North Carolina in Charlotte. Both teams closed the regular season with strong records and NCAA Tournament aspirations, and their most recent meeting showed just how tight this rivalry can be. North Carolina defeated Clemson 67-63 on March 3 in Chapel Hill, using strong three-point shooting and a spirited defensive effort to secure the win. Now the teams meet again on a neutral court with much more on the line in this Clemson vs North Carolina contest, with a spot in the ACC semifinals up for grabs.
North Carolina enters the contest with a 24-6 record and one of the most efficient offenses in the conference. The Tar Heels average just under 80 points per game and consistently generate quality looks thanks to strong ball movement and size inside. It's been impressive to see the Tar Heels continue to perform for the most part despite not having Caleb Wilson available due to injury, which speaks to their toughness across the roster.
Clemson has built its success on the opposite side of the floor. The Tigers allow just over 66 points per game and regularly force opponents into low-efficiency possessions. Their physical style slows the pace and keeps games close, which is exactly what happened when the teams met earlier this month.
The previous meeting showed the difference in styles between the programs. Clemson dominated inside scoring and points in the paint, but struggled to keep up with North Carolina’s three-point shooting. If the Tigers want to reverse the result this time, they must close out on shooters and avoid allowing another barrage from long range.
North Carolina
Clemson
Stat | Clemson | North Carolina |
|---|---|---|
Points per game | 74.4 | 79.8 |
Points allowed per game | 66.2 | 71.0 |
Team Field Goal % | 46% | 47% |
Rebounds Per Game | 34.7 | 38.0 |
Assists Per Game | 12.9 | 16.0 |
This meeting should resemble the tight contest these teams played earlier in March. Clemson’s defense and physical play style often keep games close, while North Carolina relies on scoring balance and strong shooting from outside. The Tar Heels hold advantages in rebounding, playmaking, and offensive production, which makes them the more reliable side in a close tournament game. I will lay the 1.5 points with North Carolina, as they should do just enough offensively to overcome Clemson's attempts to slow the game down in Charlotte.
