The WNBA season opens with a historic night in Toronto as the expansion Toronto Tempo hosts the Washington Mystics at Coca-Cola Coliseum. Toronto enters its first game in franchise history expecting plenty of energy from a packed home crowd, while Washington arrives with one of the league’s youngest groups after a major roster overhaul. Oddsmakers expect a close game, and that makes this Mystics vs Tempo matchup the most intriguing on Friday’s opening night slate.

Key Storylines
- Toronto plays its first regular-season game in franchise history and should benefit from an emotional home atmosphere. We saw the Golden State Valkyries enjoy a similar boost at home in their inaugural season last year, giving us a blueprint for what to expect on Friday night in Canada.
- The Tempo will be coached by Sandy Brondello, who has had a legendary coaching career in the W, coaching successful teams like the Phoenix Mercury and New York Liberty. Her leadership is exactly what an expansion team needs to have immediate success.
- Washington enters the season with a youthful roster featuring several recent draft picks expected to play major minutes immediately. Lauren Betts will make her regular-season debut for the Mystics after leading UCLA to a national championship just a month ago.
- The Mystics are also going to have Georgia Amoore on the floor, whose rookie season last year never got off the ground due to a knee injury. Her playmaking ability will be important for Washington right away.
Key Players
Toronto Tempo
- Marina Mabrey gives Toronto an experienced scoring guard who can create shots from deep and off the dribble. Mabrey was very good with the Connecticut Sun and she will hope that a better roster and coaching situation mean even better things for her in 2026.
- Kia Nurse brings veteran leadership and familiarity with Canadian basketball fans. Her ability to stretch the floor offensively and defend multiple positions gives Toronto lineup flexibility.
- Brittney Sykes is one of the most exciting guards in the WNBA and she joins the Tempo after spending much of her career with the Mystics. Her ability to create in transition will be a key factor in deciding this contest.
Washington Mystics
- Shakira Austin remains one of the most important players on Washington’s roster after the organization matched Toronto’s contract offer earlier this offseason. Her interior scoring and rebounding will be critical against a Tempo team that lacks elite size.
- Sonia Citron has quickly become one of Washington’s most reliable perimeter scorers. She will look to follow up on a big rookie season in the first game of her sophomore campaign here.
- Kiki Iriafen adds athleticism and scoring near the basket. She was also an elite rookie last year and will be counted on to generate second chances for Washington and to score around the rim.
Head-to-Head & Betting Trends
- This is the first meeting between these franchises.
- Washington went 21-23 against the spread last season.
- Washington was 6-16 on the road during the 2025 campaign.
Mystics vs Tempo Model Projection
- Score Projection: Washington Mystics 77 – Toronto Tempo 81
- Win Probability: Washington Mystics 45%, Toronto Tempo 55%
Toronto has several advantages entering this opener. The Tempo possess more experienced guards, stronger perimeter shooting, and a major emotional edge with the franchise debut taking place in front of a sold-out Canadian crowd. Washington may eventually develop into a dangerous team, but there could be growing pains early in the season with so many key players being as young as they are. I’m going to take the Tempo to win at home in their first regular-season game in the W with that in mind.
