The Los Angeles Sparks head east on Saturday looking to continue their strong early-season start when they visit the Connecticut Sun at PeoplesBank Arena in Hartford. Los Angeles enters the game with a winning record and one of the league’s most productive offenses, while Connecticut has struggled through the opening weeks and is still searching for consistency on both ends of the floor. This Sparks vs Sun matchup is the second game of a back-to-back for LA, who will have to overcome fatigue to get a second win in as many nights.
Los Angeles arrives with confidence after a 92-87 road victory over Washington on Friday. The Sparks have improved to 4-3 and have shown the ability to win in different ways. Their offense ranks among the best in the WNBA, averaging more than 91 points per game, while their shooting efficiency has been outstanding through the first few weeks of the season.
Connecticut enters at 1-8 and is still attempting to find the right lineup combinations. The Sun recently activated Leila Lacan, hoping her playmaking and perimeter defense can provide a spark. Connecticut has struggled offensively, averaging fewer than 75 points per game, and faces a difficult test against one of the league's most explosive attacks.
Fatigue could be an issue for the Sparks on the second game of a back-to-back. Another factor worth monitoring is the venue. The Sun are playing in Hartford as part of a special event that has generated considerable local interest. The atmosphere should be energetic, but the basketball matchup still favors Los Angeles based on current form and statistical performance.
Connecticut Sun
Los Angeles Sparks
The numbers strongly favor Los Angeles entering this contest. The Sparks rank near the top of the league in scoring, field goal percentage, and offensive efficiency. Connecticut owns a rebounding advantage, but that edge has not translated into victories because the Sun continue to struggle shooting the basketball. A team averaging fewer than 75 points per game faces a difficult assignment against a Sparks roster loaded with scoring options.
With all of that said, I'm going to take the points with the Sun here. They should at least be able to keep things competitive against a Sparks team playing for the second night in a row, even if the Sparks should ultimately win the game.
