The men’s 1500m short track speed skating event at the 2026 Winter Olympics is headlined by Canadians and a Dutch skater trying to get their hands on Olympic gold. With a deep field of proven veterans and rising stars, the distance combines strategy with raw speed, creating frequent upsets and dramatic finishes. Before this short-track event gets going in Italy, you will find my men's 1500m race prediction right here.

Olympic Men’s 1500m Major Storylines
There are several compelling storylines circulating around this event that bettors should consider before placing wagers:
- William Dandjinou enters the event as the betting favorite following his gold medal performance at the 2025 World Championships in the same distance, which gives him momentum and confidence against the field.
- Jens Van’t Wout, the recent Olympic champion in the 1000m sprint distance, has shown elite form and speed this week in Milan, translating his tactical acumen into a strong campaign across sprint and middle distances.
- Steven Dubois has been a consistent presence in the top echelon of short track events, bringing experience and a high racing IQ that can pay dividends in chaotic 1500m races.
- Several underdog names like Thomas Nadalini and Hwang Daeheon are priced longer but have the skill set and tactical patience to capitalize if the race opens up due to collisions or strategic surges.
- Pietro Sighel, while not among the very shortest odds, deserves attention thanks to strong World Cup performances this season that have demonstrated his versatility across distances.
- Because 1500m races often hinge on split-second decisions and position changes among packs of skaters, unpredictable outcomes are more common than in pure sprint distances.
Olympic Men’s 1500m Medal Contenders
When scouting contenders for the podium in this event, a handful of athletes stand out based on recent results and their ability to handle Olympic pressure:
- William Dandjinou — The Canadian skater has been outstanding in the 1500m throughout recent seasons, ultimately clinching the 2025 World Championship title in Beijing, which makes him the man to beat heading into this Olympic final.
- Jens Van’t Wout — Fresh off winning the 1000m gold in Milan, the Dutch skater’s form is exceptional right now. His raw speed, combined with tactical savvy from years of elite competition, makes him a clear medal favorite.
- Steven Dubois — Another Canadian in strong form, Dubois brings both aggression and patience, which are necessary ingredients in succeeding in the 1500m.
- Hwang Daeheon — Hwang’s race experience and ability to navigate through traffic in tight fields could see him earn a podium spot if he rides smartly and avoids trouble.
- Pietro Sighel — While slightly overlooked by some markets, Sighel’s competitive sharpness on the World Cup tour suggests he cannot be discounted on race day.
- Thomas Nadalini — The Italian skater brings crowd support and motivation as a home nation contender, and those intangibles can sometimes spur breakthrough performances.
It is also worth remembering that one crash and one advancement decision could completely change these Olympic games for any of these athletes. This is a much more volatile sport than long-track speed skating, which all bettors should keep in mind.

Confidence: 4/5
Final Thoughts
My prediction to back the Dutchman rests on a combination of recent form, tactical strengths, and the ability to perform under Olympic conditions. Jens Van’t Wout’s sprint speed and sharp finishing ability could be decisive in the final laps, especially in a race that may stay tight and tactical for the first portions. Dandjinou’s championship pedigree in this distance makes him a formidable opponent who can handle pressure and respond to mid-race surges. And Steven Dubois’ race intelligence offers a key edge if race dynamics become crowded or unpredictable. Those three should make the podium in this event.
