The men’s 4 x 7.5km relay at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina is one of the marquee cross-country skiing events on the schedule. As teams from across the globe prepare to take on Italy’s challenging course, all eyes are on the defending champions and their primary challengers. Can anyone find a way to compete with Norway, or will the kings of this sport grab gold once again? Here, I break down this race and bring you my men's 4 x 7.5km relay prediction.
The latest odds from major bookmakers show clear expectations for this relay. Norway enters as the clear favorite, with several nations at longer odds trying to close the gap:
First and foremost, Norway’s longstanding dominance in men’s cross-country skiing remains the headline. Over the past seasons, Norway has consistently led World Cup relay standings by a substantial margin and captured gold at the recent World Championships, illustrating depth and speed across all four legs. Current World Cup relay standings show Norway well ahead of France and Sweden, underscoring their strength in team events.
Trailing Norway, France sits second in the relay standings this season with a strong corps that blends reliable technique and tactical savvy. While France’s odds lag far behind Norway’s, their form suggests they can challenge for a podium finish. Sweden has shown signs of resurgence, particularly with younger skiers stepping up and competitive performances in individual events, though relay depth has been tested by injuries and inconsistent results.
Italy’s role as the host nation adds pressure and potential for an emotional performance from their quartet. Leveraging a home course advantage and support from local fans could lift Italy above their listed odds, especially if they can match tactics with the top contenders. Meanwhile, the United States sits further down in the betting but has begun building relay experience with promising individual results from athletes like Gus Schumacher and Ben Ogden.
Norway – The favorite, Norway’s dominance in relay events has become a hallmark of the sport. Their squad boasts top-level skiers capable of handling both classic and freestyle legs with speed. Norway’s performances this season have shown consistency at the front of major relays, making them the team to beat.
France – France enters as a legitimate medal threat. Their relay squad has combined strong individual skiers who can sustain pace over varied terrain. While gaps to Norway persist, France’s tactical strength and World Cup form suggest they can vie for silver or bronze and position themselves well if any frontrunner falters.
Sweden – Sweden remains a wildcard. Their relay squad has shown both promise and inconsistency, but strong results in recent individual races suggest they have the talent to contend. For bettors seeking a potential value play on an outside medal chance, Sweden could yield returns if they execute clean legs.
Italy – The home nation's benefit could play a role in Italy’s performance. Their team includes seasoned racers familiar with the course nuances and under the motivation of a supportive crowd. Given their current odds, a podium spot would be a notable surprise but not outside the realm of possibility.
United States – Seen as long shots in the betting, the U.S. relay squad has fringe medal potential if everything aligns. While they lack the history of podium finishes that Norway and France possess, noticeable strides in individual event placements have elevated expectations of a strong relay showing.
Pick: Norway to win ATS PRO
Confidence: 5/5
In relay skiing, cohesion and smooth exchanges are as crucial as individual speed. Norway has both elements in abundance, and their World Cup relay form reinforces that they are competing at a level above others. While relays can be unpredictable and races at the Olympics have seen surprises, Norway’s combination of strength, experience, and recent performance suggests they are well-positioned to secure gold once again. I don't recommend betting on this race given Norway's pricing, but Norway would be my choice to win.
