The Derby della Madonnina returns on March 8th as AC Milan and Inter meet again at San Siro in one of the most intense rivalries in European football. With the Serie A title race entering its final stretch, this clash carries major implications for both clubs. Inter arrive with a commanding lead at the top of the table and a string of victories behind them, while Milan are trying to keep pressure on their city rivals and secure a strong finish in the standings.
Inter have been dominant in league play this season, recording 22 wins in 27 matches and building a double-digit lead at the summit. Their latest league result was a 2-0 victory against Genoa, extending their domestic winning streak to 8 games and highlighting the defensive stability and attacking efficiency that have defined their campaign.
Milan, meanwhile, remain competitive in second place and recently picked up a 2-0 away win over Cremonese. However, inconsistency in recent weeks, including a loss to Parma and a draw with Como, has slowed their pursuit of the leaders, leaving them 10 points behind their city rivals.
The Milan derby tends to deliver drama regardless of form. Historically, these teams have been closely matched with Inter holding a slight edge in the all-time record. On average, their head-to-head meetings produce more than 2.5 goals per match, reflecting the attacking quality both clubs possess.
Inter Milan to win
Confidence: 3 out of 5
Inter enter this derby as the strongest team in Italy this season. They have won 14 of their last 15 league matches and have established a powerful goal difference thanks to an attack that has produced 64 goals while conceding just 21. The control offered by a strong midfield led by Nicolo Barella and Piotr Zielinski, and disciplined defensive play from the likes of Alessandro Bastoni have allowed them to dictate matches even against high-level opponents.
The Nerazzurri's potent attack has had a number of different contributors in recent matches. Federico Dimarco and Hakan Calhanoglu recently found the net in their win over Genoa, showing the range of goal threats across the squad. Lautaro Martinez has been a central figure in attack, leading the Capocannoniere race with 14 goals this season, but will miss this fixture with a calf injury. This means the likes of Pio Esposito and Marcus Thuram will need to step up in his absence to lead Inter's front line.
Milan’s campaign has been strong overall, yet their recent performances have been inconsistent. They have won three of their last five Serie A matches but have also dropped points against lower-table sides. A 0-1 defeat to Parma at home raised questions about their ability to break down defensive teams, though they responded well with a 2-0 victory over Cremonese in their latest outing.
Two factors working in Milan’s favor are their familiarity with Inter’s style and recent form against their city rivals. Milan are unbeaten against Inter since 2024, with the Rossoneri winning 3 of the last 5 contests between the two. Their defensive structure can frustrate Inter if they maintain compact lines, and they could pose a considerable threat to Inter in transition with the pace of Rafael Leao and Christian Pulisic going forward, provided the latter is fit.
Still, Inter’s overall form and squad depth give them the advantage heading into this matchup. Even when they suffer setbacks in other competitions, their league performances remain strong and consistent.
Milan: OUT: Matteo Gabbia (Hernia) QUESTIONABLE: Davide Bartesaghi (Hamstring), Christian Pulisic (Knee)
Inter: OUT: Lautaro Martinez (Calf) DOUBTFUL: Ange-Yoan Bonny (Knock)
From a betting perspective, bookmakers list Inter as the favorite. Typical market pricing places Inter around -120 to win the match, with Milan near +290 and the draw around +225. Those numbers reflect Inter’s stronger season-long form and league position.
Another angle bettors often consider in this fixture is goals. The rivalry frequently produces chances at both ends, and both teams possess attackers capable of changing the match quickly.
Derbies rarely follow a predictable script, and Milan will be highly motivated to close the gap on their rivals. Expect a tense match with plenty of emotional intensity given that local pride is on the line.
Milan should create opportunities through wide play and quick transitions, while Inter will rely on structured buildup and clinical finishing in the final third. Over the course of 90 minutes, Inter’s consistency and deeper squad give them a slight advantage.
The most likely outcome is a competitive match where Inter edge ahead through efficiency rather than domination.
