Monday's Serie A fixture at the Stadio Olimpico is a fascinating mid-table battle with a significant twist in the tale. Lazio sit 11th on 34 points and have not won in 5 games. Sassuolo arrive in 9th on 38 points, having won 5 of their last 6 league matches. On paper this is a home game for Lazio. In reality, Sassuolo are the side in form and the odds reflect a far tighter contest than many might expect.
Sassuolo Win (+243)
Confidence: 3 out of 5
Lazio's recent form is a genuine concern. Their 2-0 defeat to Torino last time out was their 5th consecutive game without a win, and they have failed to score in 3 of their last 7 Serie A matches. That is a side running seriously low on confidence. Under 2.5 goals has landed in 17 of their last 21 league games, and just 3 of their 13 home matches this season have produced more than 2.5 goals. The attack has dried up badly, with Lazio averaging just 0.9 goals scored per game across their last 10. Pedro and Cancellieri offer individual quality, but neither has been consistent enough to carry this side through a difficult run. Key absentees Hysaj, Gigot, and Maldini are all missing, which further limits Marco Baroni's options.
Sassuolo are going in the opposite direction entirely. Their 2-1 win over Atalanta last weekend was their 3rd straight league victory, extending a run that has seen them win 5 of their last 6 matches in Serie A. That kind of form travelling to any ground demands respect. Berardi is closing in on 150 career Sassuolo goals, Boloca drives the midfield, and the team is playing with real confidence right now. Away from home they have conceded in 8 consecutive meetings with Lazio in Serie A, so they do not shut up shop entirely, but they have the attacking quality to cause real problems for a Lazio backline that has conceded 1.4 goals per game in their last 10.
Head to head, Lazio lead the all-time record with 13 wins from 24 meetings, and they have lost just once in their last 10 home games against Sassuolo. But the current form gap is hard to ignore. Sassuolo have won 83% of their last 6 Serie A fixtures. Lazio have won none of their last 5.
Sassuolo at +243 is where the value sits. The books still price Lazio as slight favorites at +115, leaning on home advantage and historical record, but the form picture tells a completely different story. A team that has won 5 of their last 6 league matches deserves more respect than a +243 price suggests. Under 2.5 goals at -145 also holds merit given Lazio's attacking drought, though Sassuolo's last 5 games have all gone over 2.5, which creates a genuine tension in that market. Both teams to score at -110 is the safer play if you want to reflect Sassuolo's attacking output against Lazio's defensive vulnerabilities.
Lazio's home record against Sassuolo is strong historically, but this is not a normal Lazio side right now. 5 games without a win, 3 games without scoring, and a growing list of injuries tells the story of a squad that is low on confidence. Sassuolo are sharp, scoring freely, and will back themselves to exploit a vulnerable home defence. The form difference is too significant to ignore. Back Sassuolo to take all 3 points at the very workable price of +243.
