Two of European soccer's biggest clubs go head-to-head at the Parc des Princes on March 11th in a Champions League Round of 16 for both sides. PSG, the reigning European champions, host Chelsea, the current Club World Cup holders, in a tie packed with storylines, history, and genuine uncertainty. This one is worth getting your money down on early.
Both Teams to Score: Yes at -125
Confidence: 4 out of 5
The backdrop to this tie is fascinating. Chelsea beat PSG 3-0 in the Club World Cup final last July, a shock result that still stings in Paris. Luis Enrique's side will be looking to turn the tables on home soil, and that motivation could be decisive in the opening exchanges at the Parc des Princes.
PSG sit top of Ligue 1 and have been the dominant force in French football all season. However, their Champions League campaign has been inconsistent. They won only 1 of their last 5 UCL matches, drawing 2 and losing 2, and they were forced through the knockout play-offs after finishing outside the top 8. They got past Monaco there, but only just, winning 2-3 away and drawing 2-2 at home.
To make matters worse, their last Ligue 1 outing before this match was a 3-1 defeat at home to Monaco, hardly the confidence boost they needed. Key midfielders Fabian Ruiz and Joao Neves are both sidelined through injury, which limits their midfield options significantly.
When PSG are at their best though, they are genuinely frightening. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has been outstanding since joining from Napoli and is one of the most dangerous wingers in Europe right now. Desire Doue continues to develop into one of the best young players on the continent, and Bradley Barcola offers explosive pace on the opposite flank. Goals have been plentiful in PSG matches. Over 2 goals have been scored in 7 of their last 8 games, and they average 2.6 goals per game this season.
Chelsea arrive in Paris with psychological confidence but a packed schedule. Under Liam Rosenior, who replaced Enzo Maresca earlier this season, the Blues have picked up some excellent results. Wins over Aston Villa (4-1), Hull City (4-0), and Wrexham (4-2) highlight their attacking form, though a 1-2 loss to Arsenal and a 1-1 draw with Burnley show the inconsistency that has kept them 5th in the Premier League table. Importantly, Chelsea have conceded in each of their last 4 matches, which will concern Rosenior ahead of facing the attacking quality PSG possess.
Cole Palmer was the key man for Chelsea when they demolished PSG in the Club World Cup in the summer. However, his form has been indifferent this season as he has battled fitness issues. Pedro Neto and Alejandro Garnacho provide width and pace in transition, and have linked well with Joao Pedro in recent weeks. The Brazilian has been the Blues' biggest attacking threat this season, contributing 17 goals and 5 assists this season. Reece James is back from injury, which helps defensively, though Levi Colwill, Jamie Gittins, and Estevao are all ruled out.
PSG will come out of the blocks fast. The French champions will look to dominate possession and get Khvaratskhelia involved early. Chelsea will sit deep initially and look to exploit space on the break through Palmer, Pedro and Neto. The first goal is crucial. If PSG score early, Chelsea face a very long night. If Chelsea grab a goal against the run of play, PSG's frustration could open the game up completely.
Given the attacking talent on display, defensive vulnerabilities on both sides, and the emotional charge surrounding the match, goals feel inevitable. PSG's home advantage and their burning desire for redemption edge them to a win, but Chelsea will score. This is not a match that ends without both teams finding the net.
