France vs Italy Nations League Preview & Prediction: Italy Can Keep It Close in Paris

France host Italy at the Stade de France on Friday after after making a perfect start to their Nations League campaign after Michael Olise's late winner in Brussels. The visitors have been less than perfect, but will be buoyed by a 4-1 win against Türkiye.
We're trading Italy +1.5 at 55¢. France have controlled long spells under Zinedine Zidane, yet they have scored only twice across their opening two matches, and would not have won in Begium if it wasn't for a moment of magic from Olise. Italy have generated chances in both games, giving them a credible route to stay within one goal even if France win as expected.
Why Italy can cover the spread

“France may be heavily favored in Paris, but Italy can keep close to the hosts' heels. Under Mancini, the Azzurri have had more threat than they ever had under Spalletti or Gattuso, registering 1.99 xG/90 in their first two matches. France, meanwhile, have been solid but unspectacular, registering just 1.25 xG/90. We still expect France to win, but Italy can keep it close.”
The market leaves room for a narrow France win
France are 70¢ to win but 46¢ to win by two or more. The 24-cent gap broadly reflects one-goal France victories, which would still pay an Italy +1.5 position.
The handicap fits better than the total
Under 3.5 goals costs 57¢, two cents more than Italy +1.5. A 2-2 draw pays the handicap but loses the under; a 2-0 France win does the opposite. Our case rests on Italy staying competitive, not on the match being low scoring.
Entry price assessment
At 55¢, our 62% projection gives Italy +1.5 a seven-point edge. At 59¢, that falls to three points. We would not chase this pick above 59¢.

The Belgium match showed the upside of Zidane's rotation. France made nine changes from their opening lineup, still held 65% possession, took 18 shots to Belgium's 12, and limited the hosts to 0.69 xG. Olise then came off the bench to provide a decisive moment of magic. France should have enough midfield depth to dictate stretches of Friday's game, with Eduardo Camavinga particularly capable of driving play forward.
The same match showed the limitation in backing a big France win at this price. Forty-one touches in Belgium's box produced 1.22 xG and one goal. France also created only 1.17 xG in Türkiye, where the hosts finished with a marginally higher 1.21, and matchwinner Mbappe has left the squad with a knee injury. France have other match winners, but their first two performances have not established a reliable two-goal scoring margin.
Italy's 4-1 win in Türkiye was an emphatic response to the Belgium defeat. Davide Frattesi, Michael Kayode, Alessandro Bastoni and Francesco Pio Esposito all scored as Italy silenced a fervent Bursa Arena. Frattesi's runs and Sandro Tonali's distribution give Italy ways to attack space if France commit numbers forward.
There is real risk to the pick. Belgium generated 2.76 xG in Rome, and Türkiye generated 2.89 against Italy despite losing 4-1. France's wide attackers could exploit similar gaps. Italy do not need a clean sheet for this trade, however. Their own 1.70 and 2.28 xG attacking returns suggest they can score, and a single Italy goal makes a France win by two much harder to secure.
France's home advantage and superior control make them the likelier winner. Italy's chance creation and France's modest scoring output make Italy +1.5 at 55¢ the better priced side. We project a 62% chance that Italy avoid a defeat by two or more, a 7-point edge over the listed price. That projection leaves room for France to exploit the chances Italy have conceded in both matches. A 2-1 France win is the central call, with the handicap also covering a draw or Italy upset.
