Chelsea welcome Brighton to Stamford Bridge on Sunday with both clubs looking to build on winning starts to the Premier League season. Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea opened their campaign with an entertaining 3-2 victory at Fulham, while Fabian Hürzeler’s Brighton produced one of the opening weekend’s standout performances in a 4-0 win over Aston Villa. With each side also advancing in cup competition on Thursday, this matchup will test their depth, defensive organization, and ability to maintain an energetic style on limited rest.
Polymarket’s match-winner pricing gives Chelsea a 53% implied probability of victory, compared with 25% for the draw and 24% for a Brighton win. Those figures establish the home side as the favorite, but they hardly suggest a straightforward afternoon. Brighton’s impressive early form and aggressive approach have helped keep the market relatively competitive. The pricing may continue to move as lineup and injury information emerges, particularly after both managers used important first-team players in their midweek fixtures.

Chelsea have started Alonso’s tenure with consecutive victories, but their Premier League opener demonstrated that further defensive work is required. The Blues scored three times at Craven Cottage, yet conceding twice allowed Fulham to remain in contention and exposed moments when Chelsea’s structure became vulnerable during transitions.
Thursday’s 2-0 Carabao Cup win over Luton was more controlled, with Chelsea dominating possession and limiting the visitors’ threat. Josh Acheampong and Maxence Lacroix helped the team earn its first clean sheet of the campaign, although Brighton will present a much more demanding test.
Chelsea must press cohesively and protect the spaces left behind their advancing fullbacks. If their midfield cannot slow Brighton’s counterattacks, another high-scoring contest could develop.
Brighton began their league campaign by overwhelming Aston Villa 4-0, generating sustained pressure and repeatedly forcing mistakes with an intense press. The Seagulls carried that momentum into Thursday’s Conference League qualifier, defeating Tromsø 4-0 after a scoreless first leg and securing a place in the league phase.
Eight goals across two matches underline Brighton’s attacking confidence, but the performances have been about more than finishing. Hürzeler’s side have moved the ball quickly, regained possession high up the field and created chances through several different players. That balance makes Brighton difficult to contain because Chelsea cannot concentrate on stopping a single attacking outlet. The visitors will try to disrupt Chelsea’s buildup and turn recoveries into immediate opportunities.
Both clubs face a rapid turnaround after playing on Thursday, giving them only two full recovery days before Sunday’s match. Chelsea had the advantage of remaining at Stamford Bridge for their victory over Luton, while Brighton also played at home against Tromsø. Neither side therefore had to manage midweek travel, but the physical demands could still influence team selection and the pace of the second half.
Alonso and Hürzeler may rotate in selected positions, although the importance of maintaining a perfect league start should encourage both to field strong lineups. Fresh substitutes could ultimately prove decisive if the pressing intensity drops late in the match.
