Leeds United and Newcastle United are both unbeaten through three Premier League matches, but they have reached five points in very different ways. Leeds’ first three league games have produced only five total goals, while Newcastle have already been involved in ten, including consecutive 2-2 draws.
That makes Over 2.5 goals the market I want to target Monday at Elland Road. Polymarket currently prices the over at 54¢, compared with 47¢ for Under 2.5. The obvious objection is Leeds’ 1-0, 1-1 and 1-1 league scorelines. But their attacking numbers have begun to move in the opposite direction, while Newcastle’s defensive process has been considerably shakier than four goals conceded suggests.
Leeds’ Unders May Be Misleading
All three Leeds league games have stayed under 2.5, but their chance creation has improved sharply over the last two matches.
Newcastle Are Allowing Chances
Newcastle have conceded 5.44 xGA through three Premier League games, suggesting their defensive record could easily be worse.
The Over Only Needs One Open Spell
Two of Newcastle’s first three league games finished 2-2, and an early goal could quickly turn this into the type of game Over 2.5 needs.

Leeds have created over four expected goals across their last two Premier League matches, while Newcastle have already allowed 5.44 xGA through three games. Newcastle’s own games have also been much more open, with two of their first three finishing 2-2. The risk is that Leeds once again control the tempo at Elland Road and Newcastle’s early finishing efficiency cools off. But at 54¢, Over 2.5 is the side I prefer.
Editor's notes

“I think the early Leeds scorelines are a little misleading. They have created enough chances to score more than once in recent games, while Newcastle have been giving opponents plenty of opportunities at the other end. At 54¢, I prefer the Over 2.5 rather than trying to pick a winner in what looks like a fairly even matchup.”
Over 2.5 goals at 54¢ on Polymarket is my preferred position.
At 54 cents, the market is effectively asking whether three or more goals occur more than 54% of the time. Traditional sportsbook pricing is slightly more aggressive, where some lists Over 2.5 at -133, an implied probability of roughly 57% before accounting for the bookmaker margin. That makes the Polymarket price the more appealing way to express the same opinion.
The case for the over is not simply that Newcastle have produced entertaining scorelines. Leeds have created more than their three league goals indicate, particularly over the past two matches, while Newcastle have conceded substantially more expected goals than actual goals. Add Wednesday’s nine-goal cup game involving Leeds and there are signs that the early low-scoring results at Elland Road may not tell the full story.
Leeds have scored exactly once in each of their first three Premier League matches, but the underlying progression is more encouraging.
They generated only 0.49 xG in the 1-0 opening win at Nottingham Forest, followed by 1.42 xG against Brentford and 2.62 xG at Brighton. That is more than four expected goals across the past two league matches for only two actual goals.
The Brighton performance is particularly relevant. Leeds managed five shots on target and created enough chances to score more than once, while Brighton generated plenty at the other end. One xG provider had that match at 1.99-2.31 in expected goals, despite the final score being only 1-1.
In other words, Leeds' run of unders has not necessarily been driven by games without chances.
As a neutral watcher – Newcastle has been fun following so far. The games are volatile and chances are created at both ends. And looking at the stats, this is the part pushes me toward the over.
Newcastle have conceded four goals through three league matches, but their 5.44 xGA suggests that number could easily be higher. They have also generated only 3.14 xG themselves while scoring six.
Both sides of that equation create volatility. Newcastle have been finishing chances at a rate that may not continue, but their defense is also allowing enough quality at the other end to give Leeds a realistic route to multiple goals.
Bournemouth exposed those issues last weekend. They produced 17 shots at St James' Park, led 2-0 and won the xG battle comfortably before Newcastle recovered to draw 2-2 through Harvey Barnes and Jacob Ramsey. Opta recorded Bournemouth ahead 1.50 to 0.66 on xG.
Another Newcastle game does not need to follow exactly the same script for Over 2.5 to land. It just needs both teams to continue creating opportunities.
Of course we have to mention the Leeds game against Chelsea on Wednesday, which ended in a staggering 6-3 defeat in the Carabo Cup. But it needs pointing out that Daniel Farke made eight changes and Chelsea also rotated heavily, so treating it as equivalent to a Premier League match would be misleading.
Still, nine goals are difficult to completely dismiss.
Leeds went 2-0 ahead and eventually produced 18 attempts and six shots on target, scoring through Tarik Muharemovic, Brenden Aaronson and Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Once Chelsea introduced Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers, Pedro Neto and Reece James at halftime, however, Leeds struggled badly with the increased attacking tempo and conceded six times in the second half.
Newcastle cannot reproduce Chelsea's bench quality, but the match was another reminder that Leeds can both create chances and become vulnerable when the game opens up.
Two of Newcastle's three Premier League fixtures have finished 2-2, including their latest match against Bournemouth. They have six goals scored and four conceded despite underlying numbers that suggest neither their finishing nor their defending has been particularly stable.
That matters for this trade because Newcastle do not necessarily need to dominate at Elland Road. A 2-1 game works just as well as a comfortable Newcastle win.
If Leeds can reproduce the attacking threat they showed at Brighton and Chelsea, Newcastle's defensive numbers suggest there should be opportunities. And if Newcastle score first, Leeds will have to move away from the controlled game state that helped produce those early-season unders.
For the over to cash, Leeds probably need to contribute. Newcastle's six goals from just eight shots on target and 3.14 xG are unlikely to represent a sustainable finishing rate, so I would not build the argument around the visitors scoring three themselves.
The concern is obvious: Leeds have yet to play a Premier League match with three goals, and a cautious first half could leave this market needing a lot late.
But the more recent chance creation tells a different story from the scorelines. Leeds produced 2.62 xG at Brighton before scoring three times at Stamford Bridge, while Newcastle have already allowed 5.44 xGA and were opened up repeatedly by Bournemouth.
At 54¢ on Polymarket, I would rather trade on those underlying opportunities beginning to show up on the scoreboard than assume Leeds' run of low-scoring league results continues.
Prediction: Leeds 2-1 Newcastle
Best Trade: Over 2.5 Goals — 54¢ on Polymarket
