The Winnipeg Jets will travel east to take on the New York Islanders on Monday afternoon. The Jets have split their first two games of the season, while the Islanders are still seeking answers after two straight losses to begin their campaign. Here, I break down this matchup from Long Island and bring you my Jets vs Islanders prediction for Monday's matchup.
The Jets are 1–1 to open the season, bouncing back from a loss to Dallas by beating the Kings 3–2. Mark Scheifele scored twice and Connor Hellebuyck turned aside 30 shots in Winnipeg's first win of the season. The Jets' defense bounced back nicely from their struggles in their season opener and they will try to build on that in this contest.
The Islanders are 0–2 to start the year. Their most recent outing was a 4–2 home loss to Washington, in which top draft pick Matthew Schaefer scored his first NHL goal. Isles goaltender Ilya Sorokin allowed four goals on 29 shots in that contest. Turnovers and a shaky defense were costly and the Islanders need to get better in those areas to avoid a third straight loss.
Connor Hellebuyck is likely to get the nod in goal for Winnipeg. His save percentage sits at .899 in early play, and while his GAA is a bit bloated early, he’s an elite netminder who the Jets will lean on to contend for a title this year.
Ilya Sorokin will be under the microscope for the Islanders. He’s struggled to this point, allowing 4.21 goals on average in those first two starts, with a .860 save percentage. The Jets’ forwards will test Sorokin throughout this contest.
Winnipeg:
New York Islanders:
Player | Prop |
|---|---|
Mark Scheifele | Over 1.5 points |
Kyle Connor | Over 0.5 goals |
Bo Horvat | Over 0.5 assists |
Matthew Schaefer | Over 0.5 points |
Score Projection: Winnipeg 4 – Islanders 2
Win Probability: Jets 58%, Islanders 42%
We should see the Winnipeg Jets get their second win in a row by defeating the Islanders in this contest. The Isles have struggled defensively, while the Jets are known for clamping down on defense over the last few years. That should mean more scoring chances early on for the Jets, allowing them to create separation in this contest.
