The United States and Germany will face off in a preliminary round game in the men’s ice hockey tournament at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan. The Americans enter this matchup with a perfect record in Group C, having defeated Latvia 5-1 and secured a 6-3 win over Denmark. The Germans are coming off a 4-3 loss to Latvia, leaving questions about their consistency despite boasting elite talents such as Leon Draisaitl and Tim Stützle. With first place in the group and a quarterfinal bye on the line, Sunday’s contest is a huge one, and you will find my USA vs Germany prediction below.
Pick: Germany +3.5 ATS PRO
Confidence: ★★★★☆
Team USA enters this contest unbeaten in group play with wins over Latvia and Denmark. The 6-3 victory over Denmark saw the Americans overcome an early deficit and display a potent offensive effort with multiple goal scorers getting in on the act. Their balanced scoring is a product of their depth and makes it difficult for Germany to focus on shutting down just one line.
Germany is 1-1 in Group C after a bounce-back win against Denmark was followed by a surprising 4-3 defeat at the hands of Latvia. That result raises concerns about Germany’s ability to protect leads and manage tight games against high-caliber opposition. Despite this setback, Germany’s roster includes NHL stars like Leon Draisaitl and Tim Stützle, whose individual skills can change the complexion of a game even when the team struggles overall.
For the U.S., goaltender Jeremy Swayman earned the victory against Denmark, stopping 18 shots and stabilizing in key moments as the Americans pulled away. Swayman struggled early on, but he managed to stay calm under pressure as the game went on. I would think we will see Connor Hellebuyck again here after he got the win against Latvia.
Germany’s goaltending situation features experienced netminder Philipp Grubauer, a seasoned NHL competitor who has been capable of strong performances. However, the Latvia game saw defensive lapses that put pressure on the goaltender, raising questions about Germany’s defensive structure and ability to limit high-danger chances against elite offenses like the U.S.
Standouts for the United States include forwards like Brady Tkachuk, who scored in consecutive games and helps set the physical tone, and Jack Eichel, who has contributed offensively with multi-point outings. The U.S. forward group depth is a major factor, enabling matchup flexibility and scoring from throughout the lineup.
On the German side, Leon Draisaitl is the centerpiece, bringing significant offensive firepower and experience as a top-tier NHL scorer. Tim Stützle is also an NHL star, and is a major scoring threat when healthy. However, Germany’s supporting cast must provide consistent secondary contributions against stronger defensive systems.
Score Projection: United States 5 – Germany 2 ATS PRO
Win Probability: United States 80%, Germany 20% ATS PRO
The United States should get the win in this game, which could prevent Germany from advancing in this tournament. But I'm going to take the 3.5 goals with Germany as a puckline underdog, as they need this game more than the Americans do, and they should show a ton of fight with that in mind, as these teams try to close out group play with a win.
