The quarterfinal stage of the 2026 Olympic men’s ice hockey tournament features a battle between Sweden and the United States in what promises to be one of the most interesting games of the quarterfinal round. Both teams feature rosters loaded with NHL talent, and with a spot in the semifinals and a step closer to medal contention on the line, this game will be appointment viewing from Milan. Here, I break it all down and give you my Sweden vs USA prediction in Olympic men's hockey.
Pick: USA -1.5 ATS PRO
Confidence: ★★★★☆
Sweden earned its way into this quarterfinal by defeating Latvia 5-1 in the qualification playoffs, showing offensive balance with goals from several NHL stars, including Mika Zibanejad, William Nylander, and Gabriel Landeskog while Lucas Raymond contributed three assists. That win was a bounce back after a group stage that saw Sweden finish third and require the extra qualification round to get here. The Swedes have been inconsistent at times but have the firepower to challenge any opponent. The United States cruised through Group C with a 3-0 record, posting a combined 16-5 margin and most recently defeating Germany 5-1. Auston Matthews leads the Americans with 5 points so far in the tournament, and the team’s offensive depth has been evident in scoring across multiple lines.
Goaltending may be one of the deciding factors here. Sweden has used both Jacob Markstrom and Filip Gustavsson in net, with Markstrom getting the start in the win over Latvia and delivering solid performance stopping the majority of shots faced. His familiarity with NHL opposition and calm under pressure could be crucial against a high-powered American attack. For the United States, Connor Hellebuyck has been reliable through his starts, surrendering only two goals in his outings and giving his team a chance to win every night. If Hellebuyck can maintain his composure and limit second-chance opportunities, that could tilt the game in the favor of Team USA.
On Sweden’s side, Lucas Raymond’s playmaking ability will be essential, as will contributions from Adrian Kempe and other high-end forwards. On defense, veteran Victor Hedman provides leadership and strong positioning, which may be needed against the United States’ transition game. For the U.S., Auston Matthews is the offensive centerpiece, but secondary scorers have stepped up, and balanced scoring can make the American attack harder to predict.
Score Projection: Sweden 2 – USA 4 ATS PRO
Win Probability: Sweden 35%, USA 65% ATS PRO
This quarterfinal has all the ingredients of a classic international hockey contest. Sweden’s NHL experience and depth make them dangerous, but the United States’ consistency, strong goaltending, and balanced scoring give them the edge in this matchup. With the Americans likely to control possession and generate sustained offensive pressure, backing the U.S. to advance seems like the prudent choice. I'm going to lay the puckline with the Americans, as they should jaunt into the semifinal round.
