The San Jose Sharks continue their Eastern road swing Sunday night with a visit to Ottawa, where the Senators have quietly built a strong home record and remain in the thick of the playoff race. Ottawa has played solid hockey over the last two weeks, while San Jose is coming off a confidence boost after a road win in Montreal. With young stars leading the offense on both sides, this Sharks vs Senators matchup is expected to be an entertaining one.
San Jose enters the game with a 32-26-6 record and has hovered around the playoff bubble in the Western Conference for much of the season. The Sharks have alternated wins and losses recently but picked up an important road victory Saturday with a 4-2 result against Montreal, which was their second in a row. Young center Macklin Celebrini led the offense in that win with two goals and an assist. Over their last five games, the Sharks have gone 2-1-2, showing improved offensive output but still giving up goals at a high rate.
Ottawa holds a 33-23-9 record and has been steadier over the past week. The Senators are 4-1 in their last five games and recently blanked Anaheim 2-0 behind a shutout performance from Linus Ullmark. Ottawa has been productive offensively during that stretch, scoring 15 goals across those five games while tightening up defensively.
Ottawa is expected to lean on Ullmark, who has been solid this season with an 20-9-7 record, a 2.77 goals against average, and a save percentage of .886. His recent shutout performance showed that he is capable of carrying the load when Ottawa needs a big game in net. San Jose is expected to go with Alex Nedeljkovic to change things up on the second night of a back-to-back, who shares an identical GAA to that of Ullmark.
The spotlight on San Jose centers around Celebrini, who has put together a remarkable campaign. The young center leads the Sharks with 35 goals and 59 assists for 94 points, serving as the engine of their offense. His ability to create scoring chances off the rush makes him the most dangerous player on the ice in this game.
Ottawa counters with Tim Stutzle, who continues to develop into one of the league’s most dynamic playmakers. Stutzle has 30 goals and 40 assists for 70 points this season and drives Ottawa’s top line. Ottawa also gets steady production from players like Brady Tkachuk and Thomas Chabot, giving the Senators more depth scoring than San Jose.
San Jose brings explosive scoring potential thanks to Celebrini and a forward group that can generate chances quickly. However, their defensive play has been inconsistent all season, which often leads to high scoring contests. Ottawa’s deeper forward group should take advantage of those openings, especially on home ice where the Senators have been productive.
It is also interesting to note that both teams are playing on the second games of back-to-backs here after playing on Saturday. The tired legs on both sides of this matchup should help us get over the total, in what should be an entertaining affair from Ottawa.
