Updated April 3, 2026
Friday night brings a high-stakes Metropolitan Division clash as the Philadelphia Flyers visit the New York Islanders with playoff positioning hanging in the balance. Both teams enter this game off recent losses, but the urgency is unmistakable. The Islanders currently hold third place in the Metro standings, while the Flyers are chasing a Wild Card spot from just a few points back. With time running out for teams to make their moves, you will find my Flyers vs Islanders prediction below ahead of this important matchup.
Recent form
Philadelphia enters this game in solid overall form despite dropping a 4-2 decision to Detroit on Thursday. The Flyers are still 6-3-1 over their last 10 games, showing consistent scoring and competitive play. However, the back-to-back situation is a concern, especially heading into a road game against a rested opponent.
The Islanders have been more inconsistent, going 5-5 in their last 10 and dropping two straight, including a 4-3 loss to Buffalo. Even so, they remain in a stronger position in the standings with 89 points compared to Philadelphia’s 86, and they have already shown they can secure points in this matchup, going 1-0-2 in the season series.
Goaltending
New York is expected to turn to Ilya Sorokin, who continues to be one of the more reliable netminders in the league. He owns a 2.59 goals-against average and a .910 save percentage this season, with elite numbers against Philadelphia historically, including a 1.53 goals-against average in prior meetings.
Philadelphia is likely to start Dan Vladar due to the back-to-back. Vladar has posted a 2.50 goals-against average and a .904 save percentage this season, which is solid but a step below Sorokin’s ceiling. The situational edge clearly favors New York in net.
Key skaters
The Islanders are led by Mathew Barzal, who has 68 points, and Bo Horvat, who has 30 goals and 55 points while riding a productive stretch. Rookie defenseman Matthew Schaefer has also been a breakout contributor with 57 points, giving New York additional offensive support from the blue line.
Philadelphia counters with Travis Konecny, who leads the team with 66 points and is currently on a four-game point streak. Trevor Zegras has added 61 points and is riding a seven-game streak, while Owen Tippett continues to contribute with 27 goals. The Flyers have scoring depth, but they face a tougher defensive opponent in this matchup.
This matchup should go to the Islanders due to several converging factors. The goaltending edge with Sorokin is significant, especially against a Flyers team playing on tired legs. New York also benefits from home ice and has already demonstrated that they can win big against the Flyers previously this year.
Philadelphia’s recent run cannot be ignored, but the situational spot works against them. A back-to-back on the road against a good defensive team is rarely ideal, and their special teams remain a weakness with a power play ranked near the bottom of the league. If the Islanders dictate the pace of play early, they should be able to create separation and cover the puckline at home.
