The Stanley Cup Playoffs open the second round with a Metropolitan Division clash on Saturday night as the Philadelphia Flyers visit the Carolina Hurricanes for Game 1. Carolina enters as the top seed in the division after a dominant regular season, while Philadelphia arrives with confidence after a strong opening round against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Before the puck drops in this second-round series, continue reading to get my Flyers vs Hurricanes Game 1 prediction in the betting markets.
Recent form
Philadelphia enters the second round of the postseason after a 4-2 triumph in the first round over the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Philadelphia Flyers took the first three games of that in-state rivalry series, and closed things out in Game 6 after dropping Games 4 and 5. Carolina has been even sharper, sweeping the Ottawa Senators in the opening round and making a statement of intent as they look to prove they are the class of the Eastern Conference.
Goaltending
This game features a strong matchup in net. Philadelphia is expected to lean on Dan Vladar, who posted a .937 save percentage and a 1.61 goals-against average in the opening round of the playoffs. Carolina counters with Frederik Andersen, who has been elite with a .955 save percentage and a 1.10 goals-against average through the first four games of Carolina's postseason. Andersen’s numbers suggest a clear edge, especially behind a defense that limits chances more effectively.
Key skaters
Carolina’s offense is led by Taylor Hall and Sebastian Aho, both active contributors in scoring chances and goal production in the playoffs. Hall led the Canes with 7 points in the first round, while Aho had 3 points and is a constant threat with the puck at his stick.
Philadelphia will look to Travis Konecny and Trevor Zegras to lead them offensively. Both had four points in the first round against the Penguins and they will be influential if the Flyers are going to contend in this series.
Carolina comes into the start of this round with a rest advantage after playing just four games in round one, while the Flyers had to play a grueling six-game series against a rival. I expect a competitive opening period as both teams settle in, but Carolina’s depth and fresh legs should gradually tilt the ice toward them. I recommend laying the puckline with the Canes here, as they should set the tone for this series with a two-goal win on home ice.
