Montreal is not limping into this matchup. The Canadiens have won 5 straight and 7 of 10. Tampa is hot too, but in a different way. The Lightning have piled up offense during an 8 game points streak, and that matters because this game sets up as a battle between 2 teams arriving with confidence rather than one contender bullying a slumping opponent.
The previous games have resulted in 7 and 8 goals in regular time, both in favor of the Lightning.

The Canadiens are one of the best power-play teams in NHL and one of the highest-scoring teams in the league.
Tampa owns the better defensive baseline and the better overall territorial profile, but Montreal brings enough finish and enough power-play punch to keep this from projecting as a low-event game.
That is why the total stands out. Tampa’s second game in as many nights, the absence of Victor Hedman, and the possibility of Jacob Fowler facing one of the league’s most efficient offenses all point toward chances at both ends.
Tampa Bay is priced around -172 on the moneyline, which implies about 63.2% before bookmaker margin. That feels a bit rich given Montreal’s 5 game winning streak and Tampa’s back-to-back spot. The total of 6.5 is the cleaner market because it lets us fade the situational risk on the side while still backing the offensive environment.
Market | Odds |
|---|---|
Moneyline | Montreal +145 | Tampa Bay -172 |
Total | Over 6.5 -120 | Under 6.5 |
Puckline | Tampa Bay -1.5 +150 |
Daily projections list Jacob Fowler as Montreal’s unconfirmed starter and Andrei Vasilevskiy as Tampa Bay’s unconfirmed starter. If that holds, the goalie gap is real. Fowler owns a 2.71 goals against average and a .899 save rate in limited work, while Vasilevskiy sits at 33-12-4 with a 2.38 goals against average and a .908 save rate.
That gap is one reason Tampa is favored, but it also supports the over. Montreal can score on its own, and Tampa has the kind of front-end finish that can punish a young goalie quickly.
Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield are driving Montreal right now, while Brayden Point, Brandon Hagel, Jake Guentzel and a possible Kucherov return give Tampa Bay major finishing power. If Kucherov is cleared, the scoring ceiling rises another level.
Montreal is not a fading team at the moment, and Tampa is not walking into a soft matchup against a broken offense.
The sharper play is the total. Both teams are scoring, both special teams units can matter, and the goalie and schedule setup gives this matchup more paths to 7 goals than the side gives either team to covering with comfort.
Final Score Prediction: Montreal Canadiens 3 – Tampa Bay Lightning 4
