Get our one-minute expert breakdown of Game 7 between Montreal and Tampa
Recent form
Both teams enter Game 7 with identical 3-3 records in the series and similar recent form overall. The defining trend is how close these games have been, with every matchup decided by one goal. Tampa’s Game 6 win showcased its ability to respond under pressure, while Montreal had previously taken a 3-2 series lead with a 3-2 victory in Game 5.
Goaltending
This series has turned into a showcase for the netminders. Andrei Vasilevskiy delivered a 30-save shutout in Game 6, recording his eighth career playoff shutout and regaining top form at the perfect time. Jakub Dobes has matched him step for step, posting a .916 save percentage and a 2.19 goals-against average in the series. With both goalies in rhythm, scoring chances are limited and high-danger opportunities might not be easy to come by.
Key skaters
Montreal leans heavily on Nick Suzuki, who has five points in this series, along with Cole Caufield, who has four. Tampa Bay counters with Nikita Kucherov, one of the most productive players in the series with six points. Depth has also mattered, as seen in Game 6 when Gage Goncalves scored the overtime winner.
The first game in this series went over the total. After that, we have seen five straight unders between these teams. I expect that trend to continue here and for us to get another relatively low-scoring matchup with a spot in the second round on the line. I'll take the under in this game, as another 3-2 final score seems about right for what has been the most competitive series in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs by some margin.
